Tom Shippey on the effectiveness of the LotR movies
Tom Shippey, who was one of Tolkien’s last students, gave an address at Hope College this Thursday on the effectiveness of the movies compared to the books. His view is, “The reason Jackson couldn’t capture the core of the original is because the cannons of narrative are different for the visual media compared to the verbal media.” You can read more at The Holland Sentinel.

I don’t want to read someone’s opinion of the “cannons [sic] of narrative” if they can’t even spell it right.

“Canon” is not a gun… And it is true that since the media book and film are so entirely different, you cannot just transfer one from the other. How do you get inside somebody’s head in a film? In a book it’s easy.
Having said all that to defend Shippey, I found the article singularly boring. I trust Celien’s report has more information!
…just to crrect irroneous impressions: My “canon” comment was directed at the reporter. I am sure that in Shippey’s script it was spelt correctly.
