Tolkien is one of the Great South Africans
In a recent poll of Great South Africans organised by the South African Broadcasting company, JRR Tolkien, who was born in Bloemfontein, was voted in at number 35. You can read the full story at The Mercury and see the complete list of the top 100 here.

I can’t help thinking that Tolkien would be a little bemused by his placement. He always seemed to think of himself as very British at heart, and I somehow doubt he ever would have called himself a South African. But when you’re compiling a Top 100 list, I guess that doesn’t matter much. 😉
