Tolkien letter for auction
A letter written by JRR Tolkien to a fan is up for auction in Australia on 10th February 2005. In the letter he tells of the difficulties facing him in getting the third and final book of the trilogy published. There are further details, including pictures of the letter at leski.com.

…”I was on holiday in Gondor, modern day Venice.” I wonder if Tolkien used Venice for any of his ideas for Gondor. Both Gondorian and Venetian archirecture feature the arch. While Venice sinks into the water, it could be seen as the decline of Gondor. Osgiliath is built on the Aunduin, but the Grand Canal goes right through Venice. Hmmmm….
