‘Hobbit’ movie not to be a LOTR bridge
EmpireOnline.com talked to both Peter Jackson and Guillermo Del Toro, and both producer (Jackson) and director (del Toro) say that the Hobbit movie will not be a film that bridges the 60-year gap into the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
“We’ve decided to have The Hobbit span the two movies, including the White Council and the comings and goings of Gandalf to Dol Guldur,” says Del Toro.
“We decided it would be a mistake to try to cram everything into one movie.” adds Jackson.

Huh… it’s not a long book, you could do it in a single film, I’m pretty sure, but I agree that a lot goes on behind the scenes. It’ll be interesting to know how they manage to mesh them together, especially as The Hobbit is written for children and the film will probably be expected to be aimed at a younger age group. Putting in too much of things like Dol Guldur might up the rating, leading to smaller audiences because adults might not want to go to a ‘kids’ film’ – I for one cringe at the idea of any film of one of Tolkien’s books being a flop!
This is all speculation, though, its an interesting plan and I prefer it to the bridge idea! I just hope that it doesn’t lead to too much making stuff up. Still, I daresay that in the years after The Hobbit was published Tolkien wrote enough to clarify those background things in his Letters, and I know there’s stuff in the Unfinished Tales too, and the two volumes of ‘This History of the Hobbit’, that they won’t have to do that.
Here’s watching with interest!
i dear i hope it does do good. this news sounds encouraging. 🙂 *sits and watches*
Agree with the nice person who posted before me. Only, I’ll try not to wince when thinking about Pete making it.
I’m wondering where they’re going to split The Hobbit into the two movies. Rivendell would be way to soon and The Battle of Five Armies might be to late. Right before they enter Mirkwood? Lake-town? Beorn’s House? After the Goblins show up? When the Great Goblins is killed? When and how many times will they break between the main story and The White Council and Gandalf and Dol Guldur? Will it be like LotR with little chunks woven together? I guess we will just have to wait until the dramatically, intensely, amazingly epic day in a coming December. We at least know that the special effects will be great, since Weta’s doing them, and Gollum and Gandalf will be excellent.
Galenfea, please don’t dis PJ!!! I understand that he took out some stuff, added others, and extended the the battle scenes maybe a little to much. All directors do that! But do you know how dedicated everyone was to the movie? Viggo slept with his horse and carried around his sword to stay in character. Many actors learned elvish. Weta created so many items each unique to their culture, most were individual themselves and some were made in Hobbit size to! The Hobbit actors had to stand up early in the morning to get their feet on. Dom was allergic to his elven cloak, yet he still wore it! And they did it probably because they had such a great director. When I first saw the first two movies after reading their books, I went into the “They did a horrible job on the movies” syndrome. Then I started watching the extras and commentaries and learned more about them, and now I’m just glad that the did such a good job! It could have been a horrible movie, embarrassing to the LotR name. But it’s not, thanks to PJ.
Agreed. I’m sorry I ranted, too. I have this strange “defend your friends” reflex (I think I picked it up from Sam or some other LotR character). Not that PJ’s my friend (though that would be quite epic!!) but I care about and respect him and don’t want him to be hurt. I totally respect your opinion, but I just wanted to make my point. I’m a little upset about the things you mentioned also, but I try to look past them and at the amazing things that were done and the little details that were put in. The scene where the Rohan refugees are attacked by Wargs is one of my pet peeves. I actually had this ongoing argument with my sister and her friend (out of all of us, I was the only one who had gotten past the Third Book and onto Sam and Frodo’s part in TTT) about weather that scene was in the book or not. I finally proved it was added. And also how Faramir acted in TTT really bugged me. But then Theoden says the Horse and Rider poem from the book (Yes, Aragorn said it, but still!), the Huorns show up (EE),many of Faramir’s lines were from the book, and Gollum’s song in the Forbidden Pool was also of Tolkien’s creation. So I do agree with you, but I just wanted to put in a few words in PJ’s defense. I shouldn’t have jumped to any conclusions, and for that I apologize. Looking back on it, I don’t see why I added the stuff about the actors (Viggo is rather amazing!) but it seemed to help make my point.
Definitely no hard feelings on my side, mellon nin.
PS. What does G** mean??
