In this MTV interview, Guillermo del Toro proffered his thoughts on letting go of the project and whether he thinks Jackson will officially take over “The Hobbit.”
I don’t understand that part about ‘Smaug not being in the Hobbit.’
How can Smaug not be in the Hobbit? He’s one of the main villians!

Totally agree with starofdunedain. I think they mean he won´t be in the *first* Hobbit movie, he thinks of someone else not smaug, or else they mean to change him a bit. Smaug can ABSOLUTELY NOT be left out, for what is the point in the story of dwarves claiming their hoard from a dragon if there is no dragon?

I think the Smaug comment was not that the dragon will not be appearing in the movie but rather that del Toro’s version and image of Smaug will be scratched and PJ will take over with his own idea of what to do with him.
