The Brandybucks were largely Fallohides, descended from the Oldbucks and from Bucca of the Marish, who had moved to Buckland following their leader, Gorhendad Oldbuck. He claimed the lands of the Eastmarch of the Shire as his own and settled there, changing his family name then to Brandybuck.

Merry of the Fellowship was probably the most famous of the Brandybuck family.
