Dior Eluchíl was the son of Beren and Lúthien. He was called Aranel during his childhood and Eluchíl afterwards.

He was born in Ossiriand in the Land of the Dead That Live, on the isle of Tol Galen. His wife was Nimloth of Doriath, kin to Thingol, and they had three children; Eluréd, Elurín, and Elwing the White.

Dior was Thingol's heir, and after Thingol was killed by Dwarves, Dior traveled to Menegroth. Soon afterwards, Beren and Lúthien left the Mortal Lands for the second - and final - time, and Thingol's Silmarillion passed unto Dior. The Sons of Fëanor heard of the whereabouts of the Silmaril, and tried to wrest it away in battle from Dior. The assailants were slain, but Dior also fell in battle. His wife Nimloth of Doriath was killed, and his two young sons Eluréd and Elurín were kidnapped and left to starve in the forest. Only Elwing and the Silmaril escaped.

Dior was also the name of the ninth Ruling Steward of Gondor, ruling from 2412 - 35 Third Age.
