A wide, shallow ford where the Great East Road, crosses the Bruinen (Loudwater) about a day’s journey from Rivendell. The bank on the eastern side is steep and slippery.

Thorin and Company crossed this ford in The Hobbit and it was here that Frodo almost gave in to the Nazgul in The Lord of the Rings. Through Elrond’s possession of the Ring of Air he gained the cooperation of the river which rose in a flash-flood, unhorsing the Nazgul and blocking their path.
