Gaffer Gamgee
Pronunciation: Gaf-fr Gam-je
Hamfast 'the Gaffer' Gamgee was married to Bell Goodchild and they had six children, the second youngest being Samwise Gamgee, and the others being Hamson Gamgee, Halfred Gamgee, Daisy Gamgee, May Gamgee and Marigold Gamgee. The Gaffer was born in TA 2926.
Originally, he was an apprentice to Holman Greenhand, a noted gardener who lived near the Pool of Bywater. Eventually, he succeeded Holman as the area's main gardener, being employed mainly in the extensive gardens of Bag End.
When he retired, Sam took over his gardening, and the Gaffer lived quietly at No 3 Bagshot Row. He died at the age of 102.
