An Orc chieftain who led the tribe of goblins (orcs) that terrorised the High Pass where the Dwarf Road crossed the Misty Mountains from Rivendell to the vale of the Great River. In The Hobbit, Thorin and Company are captured by these goblins and brought before their leader. The Great Goblin had heard of Thorin and knew the sword Orcrist for what it was. He was promptly slain by Gandalf and it was during the confusion of their escape that Bilbo became lost, leading to his finding the One Ring and meeting with Gollum.
