Lobelia Bracegirdle of Hardbottle was born in the Shire during the Third Age.

She married Otho Sackville-Baggins and they had one son, Lotho. As the closest relatives of Bilbo Baggins, the Sackville-Bagginses sought to inherit Bilbo's home, Bag End, along with all the treasures they thought were in there. Bilbo suspected her of misappropriating numbers of his silver spoons.

But Bilbo didn't like them, and he made Frodo his heir. Only after Frodo left the Shire to take the One Ring to Rivendell did Lobelia finally get the keys to Bag End as Frodo sold the hobbit hole to her.

Lobelia moved to Bag End with her son; Otho had died six years earlier.

During the War of the Ring, Lobelia stood up to Saruman's men and threatened them with her umbrella. Because of that she was arrested and taken to Bywater Prison. After the war, old Lobelia was released from the prison in front of a cheering crowd.

After she heard that Lotho had been murdered by GrĂma Wormtongue, she gave Bag End back to Frodo, returned to Bracegirdle and moved in with her relatives. After she died (1412 Shire Reckoning), Frodo was surprised to found out that Lobelia had left all of hers and Lotho's fortune to him to be used helping hobbits that were left homeless because of Saruman's actions.
