Merry is short for Meriadoc, the Brandybuck who joined Frodo on his quest to destroy the One Ring.

He and Pippin were separated from the rest of the Fellowship at Parth Galen. They went through Fangorn Forest and to Isengard before they were separated.

Merry became King Théoden of Rohan's squire.
