Narmacil I was the son of Atanatar II Alcarin and the seventeenth King of Gondor. Like his father, Narmacil I did not care much for the actual ruling of his kingdom. Tired of his duties as a King, in TA 1240 he gave the office of Regent of the Realm to his nephew Minalcar, son of Calmacil.

During the reign of Narmacil I, the Easterlings again began their attacks upon the Northmen, and in TA 1248, Minalcar rode with a great army to meet them. Not only did he defeat their armies between the Sea of Rhûn and Rhovanion, but he also destroyed their settlements and camps east of the Sea. It was after that glorious victory over the Easterlings that Minalcar, Regent of Gondor at the time, took the name of Rómendacil II.

Narmacil I was King for 68 years, from TA 1226-1294, but for 54 years of those years (TA 1240-1294) Minalcar ruled Gondor as Regent. Narmacil was the second childless King of Gondor (the first one being Tarannon Falastur), and was succeeded by his younger brother Calmacil.
