The name used by men and elves of the Third Age for the source of evil based at Dol Guldur in Mirkwood. Initially thought by the Wise to be one of the Nazgul, Gandalf discovered that it was Sauron himself.

The dwarf Thrain II was captured by the Necromancer who took from him his elven ring, leaving him to die in the dungeons. There Gandalf found him, too late to save him but in time to be entrusted with the map and key of the Lonely Mountain. During the Quest of Erebor in TA 2941, Gandalf and others of the White Council drove the Necromancer from Dol Guldur. He fled to Mordor which the Nazgul had prepared for him, and soon declared himself as the Dark Lord, Sauron.

NOTE: Necromancy is the summoning and controlling of the spirits of the dead for knowledge, gain, or revenge.
