The Second Marshal of the Mark typically commanded the West-mark and his home base was at Helm’s Deep. He had the power to summon a Muster of the West-mark.

During the time of the War of the Ring, Théodred son of Théoden served as the Second Marshal. When his father fell under the spell of Saruman and Grima Wormtongue, he assumed general command of not only the West-mark but also of the King’s Lands.

When the war with Saruman and his army began, Théodred called for a Muster of Edoras to come to his aid under the command of Elfhelm. They fought during the Battles of the Fords of Isen where Théodred was slain. After his death, Lord Erkenbrand assumed command of the West-mark and all of the Riders at the battle save those of the Muster of Edoras commanded by Elfhelm. In essence, Erkenbrand became the Second Marshal of the Mark for a time.
