Palantir was the son of Tar-Telemnar (Ar-Gimilzôr). Upon taking the sceptre he became the twenty-fourth of the Kings of Númenor.

Tar-Palantir took that name because he was far-sighted in both eye and mind. He it was who prophesized that when the White Tree of Númenor died so would the Line of Kings fail. Even those who hated Palantir feared his words for they knew he was a true-seer.

The mother of Tar-Palantir was named Inzilbêth and she was secretly a follower of the Faithful. Her mother was named Lindôrië who was the sister of Eärendur the fifteenth of the Lords of Andúnië. Palantir himself was very like to his mother in mind and he repented for the ways of the previous kings. He would spend much of his time in Andúnië in the west of Númenor. He would go often to the top of the tower built by Tar-Minastir where he would gaze into the West hoping to see a ship coming across to Númenor from Tol Eressëa. But the Eldar would sail to Númenor no more because of the insolence of the previous Kings and because the majority of the people of Númenor were of like mind.

The younger brother of Palantir was named Gimilkhâd and he was of like mind with their father, turning against the Eldar and Valar. He became the leader of the Kings Men and they resisted the will of Tar-Palantir as much as they dared openly, and more in secret.

During Palantir's reign the Faithful had peace and he went at the appointed times to the Hallow of Eru upon the summit of Meneltarma. The king also took great care to tend the White Tree of Númenor.

Tar-Palantir married late in life and had only one child, a daughter named Míriel in the elven-tongue. Upon the death of her father, Míriel would have taken the sceptre, but instead her cousin Ar-Pharazôn took her to wife by force and usurped the sceptre from her and called himself king. Ar-Pharazôn was the son of Tar-Palantir's brother Gimilkhâd.

Tar-Palantir reigned for 78 years and was succeeded by his nephew Tar-Calion (Ar-Pharazôn) in SA 3255.
