The Third House of the Edain was the name given to the third of the groups of the Race of Men to make the journey over the Blue Mountains westward into Beleriand.

The Third House was the largest group of Men and they were originally led by Malach but became divided when he remained in the land of Hithlum, and his son Magor journeyed down the River Sirion and into Beleriand where they settled in the vales of Ered Wethrin.

Hador Lórindol was the son of Hathol the son of Magor. He long was in the service of Fingolfin and the Elf-lord grew to love him as a son. Fingolfin gave to Hador all of the lands of Dor-lómin where he gathered his people to become the mightiest of the Chieftains of the Edain.

The people of the Third House of the Edain were golden-haired for the most part, and blue-eyed. They were mighty, of great strength and stature, and were bold and steadfast.

During the Dagor Bragollach Húrin and Huor (who were descended from both the Second House of the Edain and the Third House) were fighting with the Elves of Doriath led by Beleg. They were cut off from their company and were lost.

Turgon of Gondolin, having dreamt that he should help the sons of Hador in their need, sent for them and allowed them to live in his hidden city of Gondolin for a year. Though Turgon had a law that any who were allowed admittance to his city would never be allowed to leave, when Húrin and Huor desired to return to their folk he allowed it out of his love for them.

During the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, Húrin and Huor and their folk fought alongside the host of Fingon. After much fighting the host of Turgon came forth from Gondolin and was joined with the host of Fingon and all fought against the host of Morgoth together.

Húrin and Huor saved Turgon in that battle from certain death and Huor also lost his life, but last of all Húrin remained and of his tale much is said in his entry in the Encyclopedia.

The Third House of the Edain continued to ally themselves with the Eldar and were rewarded, along with the Second House of the Edain and the First House of the Edain, with the land of Númenor.

The Third House of the Edain was joined with the Second House of the Edain through marriage and in later years was also joined with the First House of the Edain through the same means.
