Disclaimer: This is my second fanfiction to be published, and the first one I have written. I welcome any comments to help me improve my writing. Of course, Tolkien must be given credit for all the characters except the children, as well as the basic plot of the Lord of the Rings. Also, a fanfiction I read on here enlightened me as to what Frodo probably went through when he came back from disposing of the ring. I noticed a few other members have stories similar to this and I have striven to make this story my own; I did have the basic story line before I even discovered this website. Anyway you all know who you are! I do want you to know I had originally planned to incarcerate Daisy but decided against that when I saw someone else had the same idea. Please enjoy and thank you.

It was finally the day! The long expected party celebrating the birthday of both Bilbo and Frodo Baggins would be held that night outside of Bag End. The vast majority of those in Hobbiton had been invited and were planning to attend, including but not limited to the Gamgee family.

Daisy was the eldest daughter in the Gamgee family, the third out of six children, born in 1372. She was a shy young lady, four years from her coming of age, and due to her timidity had not yet found a steady beau. The young men did not know she had a sweet personality because she was not the prettiest hobbit maid and they did not care to take the time to woo her and find out. She preferred being in the garden with her beloved brother Sam or even cooking much over attending social events anyway. Yet she was quite excited about this party; she was not sure why, thinking it could be due to the thrill of the moment. After all, it was the eleventy-first birthday of Bilbo Baggins, quite an exhilarating event! Her friend Frodo was also turning 33, the age of adulthood comparable to the human age of 21. At any rate, the one part of parties Daisy enjoyed was the dancing; even though most of the time she was just a wallflower, her three brothers and sometimes kindly hobbit-men would ask her for a few dances.
At the party, Daisy was standing along the sidelines, watching the dancing while sipping some apple cider, when Frodo came up. She liked him; whenever she would go to Bag End to help Sam with the gardening, Frodo always made a point to stop and chat with them a minute. What Daisy liked most was that he treated them as equals rather than just servants there to do his and Bilbo’s bidding. Now, Frodo had noticed Daisy had not danced very much.
“Daisy, why are you not dancing? Should you like to dance this four hand reel with me?” Frodo asked.
“Well my brothers all found other partners and no one else asked me; besides I needed a cup of cider anyway. If you want me to dance with you I would be honoured!” she gladly accepted, knowing he was being kind to her due to her family name and not because he thought her attractive. After all, it was his birthday too and if he wanted to dance with her she may as well oblige him. Frodo himself was not sure why he felt the urge to ask her to dance; in actuality, Frodo was not a fan of dancing, though he did enjoy watching it.

So they danced. When they were finished, she thanked him and went back to sipping her apple cider.
Sam came up, asking, “Was that Master Frodo I saw dancing with you just now? He is kind like that, isn’t he?”
“Yes, it was him and he is kind, letting us garden for him and all.”
Thus Daisy started to fall in love with Frodo, not knowing this until he left on the Journey of the Ring seventeen years later, and all the while going practically unnoticed by him.

In the seventeenth year after this event, Sam was found eavesdropping under Frodo’s window, listening to the long journey ahead to get the Ring of Power destroyed. Sam ended up having to go with them because he had heard all the plans and Gandalf thought he would prove to be useful on any account. Now, it did take a good two months for Frodo to sell Bag End and his belongings to the Sackville-Bagginses and various other hobbits, but the rumour of his moving to the Brandybuck area was quite widespread as to give them the best cover possible; one never knows who may leak information to the enemy. Sam did not tell any of his family so they only knew he planned to accompany Frodo to his new home and see him settled in. Everyone assumed he would come back when that was done.
All that changed when Daisy went to Bag End soon after Frodo had “moved”. Even though the Sackville-Bagginses were quite unpleasant, she felt the need to check on the gardens and make sure they were kept looking nice, which they allowed her to do. She found a note from Sam hidden in the garden where only she could find it. It read:
My dear sister Daisy, I have left on an adventure with Master Frodo. I do not know if we will survive, as it is very dangerous business. Please do not come after us or send anyone because this journey must be taken. Also, do not tell anyone except our dear family. With love, your dear brother, Samwise.
This, as one can imagine, caused Daisy much worry and concern, but she knew her younger brother had a good head on his shoulders and that she could trust him with her very life if need be, though he wasn’t one given to violence. It was also at this moment that she realized her true feelings for Master Frodo: she was in love with him, and had been ever since he danced with her at the long-awaited party many years before. She also knew her love was not returned; although this caused her much grief, she felt it was best that way so any thoughts of love would not hinder him from his business. So Daisy went about her life as usual, but slowly lost the youthful fervour and joy she once had.

No one knew how it happened, but within the year of the Journey of the Ring Hobbiton was somehow taken over by those allied with the forces of evil. Many hobbits were imprisoned or even killed, and some were put to forced labor. Thankfully Daisy was not imprisoned; however, her good cooking skills were put to use feeding the troupes of those evil beings who had taken over the Shire. This had been going on for quite a while when Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin finally returned and subsequently gave the Shire quite a scouring. No one could tell them exactly how long since the days were so blurred, whether one was imprisoned or put to forced labor. At any rate, Frodo just happened to be the one to spot a man towering over Daisy, insulting the way she was mixing a pot of soup.
“Here, here!” he cried. “Leave that hobbit-maiden alone!” The man turned and chuckled, thinking he could fell Frodo in one swoop. But he had never reckoned with an angry hobbit who had just come out of the hugest trial of his life! Frodo faced him with the lethal blade Sting, and he then surrendered.
“Daisy, are you hurt? You are Daisy, are you not?” Frodo asked, concerned.
“Thank you. I am quite alright now, Master Frodo! It is so good to have you home again! Do I rightly assume my brother Sam is with you, and Merry and Pippin as well, all uninjured?” she replied.
“Yes, the four of us are here and mostly unscathed, though we do sport a few small wounds, mostly healed now thanks to the elves and the King of Gondor.”
“Daisy!” She heard someone shriek behind her. She turned a found her long-lost brother Samwise, looking older than she remembered, and a good bit thinner. The siblings embraced, assuring each other they were unscathed, with Daisy updating him on the whereabouts of the rest of their family and all that had been happening in the Shire while he was away.

After the Shire had been put more or less into order, all the hobbits had a long meeting in which the four Fellowship members recounted their journeys. Sadly, most of the hobbits were either indifferent or even upset with all this; they were peaceful creatures and did not want to think violence was necessary to keep their part of the world from turning as black as the inside of Mt. Doom. Thus it took quite a while for Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin to regain their former places in hobbit society.
Sam did not seem to have as many problems as the other three; perhaps because he had changed the least in some ways. He was still the gentle and caring hobbit he had been before he had left. His family was ecstatic to have him back home, as well as the Cotton family. Rosie was still very much in love with him and eagerly accepted his proposal after Frodo had encouraged them to marry and live at Bag End with him. Bag End had been reclaimed from the Sackville-Bagginses because Lobelia had too many terrible memories revolving around that house; her husband had been killed in it as best anyone could figure, and her son was also killed during the time it belonged to her. Sam was more than happy to live there and resume his role as gardener, with which Daisy would still help him.
Frodo spoke with Daisy on occasion, and she relished in every conversation, no matter how short. However, Frodo still did not return her feelings of love, so she kept them hidden even from her own family. She knew she had to live without him as her lover and must be brave. She found it hard and still got angry with people more easily than she should, due to the feelings she had to hide, and also experienced tears at night when no one could see.

Some years later, Frodo and Sam went to Rivendell, where the elf Elrond still resided. Frodo and his Cousin Bilbo were preparing to go to the Grey Havens, where they would live immortally with the elves.
Prior to leaving, Frodo said goodbye to all who were dear to him in the Shire. Daisy was the last person to which he bid farewell. She could not bear to have her one true love leave her forever and decided to declare her feelings, however unheard of such a thing may be.
“Master Frodo, please don’t leave! I must confess that I love you, and have loved you all these years, ever since you danced with me at the long expected party. I know I have no right for my love to be returned, and am sorry to come upon you this way. I just wanted you to know how I felt. Please forgive my boldness!” Thus she wept, clinging to him for all she was worth.
“Daisy, I had no idea! Why don’t you step over here with me and I’ll explain to you why I never married or even desired to wed.”
“Alright,” she sniffed.
They went to a relatively quiet area and sat down on a bench. “Daisy, you may remember when I was younger, before the long expected party and my coming of age, that I was, um, shall we say sowing my wild oats. I think the worst I ever did was steal mushrooms from Farmer Maggot. I enjoyed running around and being carefree; you know I never really had to work, since Bilbo had more than sufficient funds for both of us and even more to give away to those in need. I think even after I came of age I still had those boyish thoughts of running in the woods and coming upon some magical elves, you know just being all carefree.
“Now that I have been through a good part of the world and seen what evil can do, I just couldn’t bear to have a woman feel sorry for me. You see, I haven’t told many people but I was wounded by a Black Rider, a wound that Elrond helped heal but one that has never fully recovered. You may have noticed that on March 13 and October 6 every year I feel quite sick; the latter is the date when I was stabbed. I feel this pain can be healed in the Grey Havens, and Queen Arwen graciously has given me her pass there, thus I must go.”
“Frodo, forgive me, I do not understand! I think any woman would want to help you get through your pain and care for you when you feel ill because of it,” Daisy commented.
“Perhaps that works for some; just look at Merry and Estella (another tale)! But I am afraid it would not do for me. I’m sorry Daisy; I must go now. Please remember I have counted you as a friend in these days since my return and I am ever grateful for your standing by my side when many others refused to even look me in the eye. Goodbye, Daisy.” With that, he gave her a quick hug and walked away, leaving her alone in her unbearable grief.

Soon Frodo and company left for Rivendell so he and Bilbo could sail away.
Thus Frodo had to say goodbye to his dearest friends, starting with Merry and then Pippin. At last, he said yet another tearful farewell to his dear friend Sam, with assurances they would meet again on the shores of the Grey Havens. Then Frodo turned and got on the boat with Bilbo, who was waiting for him on the deck.
The three remaining hobbits in the fellowship turned away, unable to watch their dear friend depart. They stayed a few days with the elves then went back home to the Shire.
Meanwhile, Frodo had just gotten onto the boat with Bilbo. Then, it hit him. Frodo suddenly realized that yes, he did love Daisy back. When he thought of her crying in utter despair he could not bear the thought of her living in misery the rest of her days. So he turned to Bilbo, saying, “Bilbo, dearest cousin, you know you have been like a father to me and I love you very much, however, I just cannot go with you at this time. I have just realized that I am in love, so I must go back and see if Daisy Gamgee will marry me!”
“Finally, lad! You’ve come to your senses at last! I could always tell Daisy had a soft spot for you, and she was growing on you as well even before you went on that adventure where you lost my ring! Of course I will miss you dearly and wish you could come, but I want you to go and enjoy the happiness marriage will bring. I was in that place once myself, you know. Goodbye, dearest cousin!”
“Goodbye, and thank you!” With that, Frodo went back to shore.
Elrond chased after him, calling, “Where are you going? The boat will leave any minute and will not return! The boats only sail every few years, depending on the need.”
So Frodo had to explain about his newfound love for Daisy. Elrond encouraged him to go back to the Shire and amend things with her. He had enjoyed a wonderful marriage with the fair Celebrian and understood the desire for such things. Merry, Pippin, and Sam were al ecstatic too and seconded Elrond’s motion.
Frodo decided it would be best to go back to the Shire by way of the Old Forest to visit Tom Bombadil and ask for his advice on the matter; after all, he had married Goldberry and ought to have a least a little knowledge on the subject of love and marriage. Elrond could have given this but was sailing to the Grey Havens, making it rather inconvenient.
He was lucky enough to find Tom near the place where the trolls were turned to stone.
“Bless me! ‘ Tis me old friends come back to visit! Do tell me you will stay a few days; my Goldberry has missed having some young ones around, visitors that she can fuss over!” Needless to say, he was quite happy to see them again.
“I am glad we ran into you, Tom! I had wanted to speak with you and get your advice on a very important matter,” Frodo said.
“Well do come on then! I’ll get you settled then you and me will go have ourselves a talk!”
Thus he went once again to visit his home, noticing the pony Fatty Lumpkin was still as big and happy as ever.
Tom explained to Frodo that females sometimes are hurt quite easily and those wounds can take time to heal; in fact they may never fully go away, much like Frodo’s own wound from the Morgul blade. He suggested Frodo go to the Shire and woo her, bringing her gifts and assuring her of his affection, going slowly so she had time to heal. Perhaps that would help him to heal as well; one never knows just exactly what love can do.
They stayed a few days with Tom then headed back to the Shire.

Back in the Shire, Daisy eventually stop crying all the time, as she had run out of tears, exchanging that for looking morbidly out the window as she faded away into a sheet of a hobbit. After a few days of sulking, she knew she had to go on with her life and make the best of things. So she tried to kill her love for Frodo by keeping herself busy, cooking and gardening, that way she did not have much time to think. She contemplated suicide for a brief moment but knew Sam and the rest of her family loved her and needed her.
A week after their return, Daisy was at the window darning a sock, when suddenly she sat up straight and rubbed her eyes. “That cannot be Frodo!” she thought. “He is away in the Grey Havens. I must be completely mad in my grief. I am so stupid for not being able to forget him.”
But it was Frodo! The figure got closer and clearer, so she got up and ran out the door. As soon as he saw her, he sprinted towards her. They met in a fierce hug before Daisy could remember she was quite angry with him for leaving.
“Oh Frodo! Is this a dream? Are you real?” Daisy inquired.
“Yes Daisy! I have come back to be with you, if you will have me! I realized just after I got on the boat that I love you and it would be cruel to leave you here all alone, just to die in utter despair. Will you forgive me and allow me to court you?”
“No!”
“What?” Frodo had expected her to be extremely excited about his second homecoming but did know womenfolk are emotional and sometimes do not seem logical to men.
She replied, “I said no.”
“Do you think we could be friends for now, then?”
“Please just go away!”
Oh dear. This was not going well. So Frodo decided to leave and not contact her for a few days, to give her time to sort out her feelings. Tom Bombadil had suggested something along these lines.

£

Daisy was quite confused. She knew she had been terribly mean to Frodo and had probably ruined her chances of ever being with him, yet she could not just let him marry her the next day. She had to test him and regain her trust in him, and also make sure that he would not leave her a second time.
Thus when Frodo came back in a few days to ask her once again to befriend him, she replied in the negative. Yet once a man has realized he is in love, there is no stopping him. Frodo gave her a full week before asking again. During that time he had secretly visited the Gaffer, her father, and gained his permission to court and marry her if he could convince her he was truly in love. Eventually Daisy gave in, seeing his affection was genuine and allowing her own to rekindle.
And so they began a beautiful courtship. Frodo was always bringing her gifts, such as a fancy new cloak or interesting kitchenware he would find in the various shops of Hobbiton. Daisy of course accepted when he finally proposed, and they were married the following week, giving each other their very first kiss, quite long, tender, and passionate.
Sam and Rosie were more than happy to share Bag End with Frodo and Daisy; it was a large home and they were able to divide it fairly evenly. The children enjoyed having a doting aunt and uncle living with them as well.

Later in the year, on October 6 to be exact, Frodo awoke moaning.
“Frodo, what’s wrong?” cried Daisy.
“Oh it’s nothing. I must have just slept on my shoulder funny; it hurts and the pain just startled me is all. Nothing to be alarmed about.”
“I’ll get you something, sweetheart. You just stay in bed today and I will care for you.”
Daisy felt it was something more than just sleeping in a funny position, so she decided to ask Sam what he thought. Sam reminded her of the date and what had happened, so she decided to try something to make him feel better. She knew Frodo was partial to her blueberry muffins, which were becoming quite famous throughout the Shire due to their delicious, decadent fluffiness. She brought him two, along with some willow bark tea, which was supposed to ease aches and pains, and enough breakfast for herself as well.
Frodo thanked her with a gentle kiss and dug in. After they finished, he allowed her to look at his shoulder. He found the willow bark tea as well as Daisy’s gentle rubbing considerably eased his pain. Daisy even made a poultice out of kingsfoil, mustard, and poppy seeds that also helped. Frodo proclaimed that was the best his wound had felt on that day for many years, and thus was satisfied he had made the right decision to come back and marry Daisy.

The same process went on in March with even better success, with his pain lessening each time due to Daisy’s gentle and loving care.

Soon, Frodo and Daisy were expecting their first child. However, they unexpectedly had twins, a boy and a girl, whom they christened Primula and Drogo, after Frodo’s parents. Two years later, they had a second set of twins, also a boy and a girl: Poppy (after Bilbo’s departed wife; another tale) and Gandalf.

And so the two couples and their lovely children lived happily ever after. Once all the children were grown, Sam and Rosie, along with Frodo and Daisy, all went to the Grey Havens, where they lived happily ever after.

The end.
