The Meaning of Life

Death – I ponder upon the word that does not oft pass through my kindred’s minds and much less through their lips. I know what it means – that one’s soul is separated from his physical body and given a new body for eternal bliss or damnation. I see not why the others mourn so for Gandalf.

Is it not a relief to be released from this cursed body, to be with God? That is a curse to my kind. We do not die but are immortal. Nevertheless, all this too shall end, we shall die also when God comes and destroys the earth. We shall live again in an eternal state with God and men. That shall be pure bliss.

Why doth Frodo mourn so? And why dost Aragorn take t he blame for the fall of our beloved friend, which he will bear in his memory for aye? Am I supposed to feel likewise? To be grieved and sad? I can see these emotions in their faces, yet I do not completely understand.

I feel out of place in this procession of grieving. I will miss Gandalf, true, but all mortal companions die, while my kin and I remain. What a mournful fate that is for us. What horrible things we must see before the end. We soon become desensitized by exposure and seek refuge away from those mortal creatures. We live a life surreal life in comparison to those mortal creatures. We cannot die; we cannot understand the feelings those go through that are touched by death.

Why must we have such a fate? We are given wisdom and some foresight, but what does it profit us to have the world if we yet lose our soul? We are given a substantially long life, yet we take it for granted. How shall we redeem our time?

O mortal men, ye also take your short time given to you on earth. It should not be so for any of us. How shall you redeem your time? I pray thee, do tell, for in the end all that matters is what thou doest for thy Creator.
