Can't Elnath just make a new account and have the first one deleted?

I agree with Maxie on this issue. It seems to be an ongoing problem and it is a good idea to mention this to the newbies. Or to anyone else who might want to to change their avatar. A notice on the homepage is a good idea or since this is the announcement thread, mention of this problem could be made here.

First of all, you are only permitted one account on the site. gwendeth who is the Admin of such things does not have the ability to delete accounts once they are made. This situation will not likely be resolved any time soon, if ever.

Secondly, I am posting Rivka's announcement regarding sizes of avatars and signatures. I have modified the avatar size as the section was not modified when we went to the previous, and this, server.

Rivka said on August 8, 2004:

There has been an abundance of extremely distracting or overwhelming signatures recently, and the staff has decided it's time to clarify what our signature rules are:

1) Images in signatures should be no larger than 60 80 pixels high.

2) No scrolling text, scrolling images, or bouncing images.

3) Animated images are acceptable, so long as they fit the above size requirements, and are not overly distracting or obnoxious to view. (I.e. little sprite images, Realm insignias, or movie clips are fine, within reason. Something that changes from bright yellow to red to blue really fast would probably be deemed too obnoxious and distracting for the forums.)

4) As always, signatures should be no larger than 3 lines of text high -- images should be aligned to the left or right of text, to better utilize space.

We're not asking this to be anal-retentive or controlling. The reality is, people come to the forums to read forum posts -- not to view your signature. When you have a sig that is overly distracting, or very long, then it makes the forums difficult for other people to read. For the good of the community, please modify your sig if it does not meet the above requirements -- or you will be contacted by staff and asked to do so.
These rules can be found on Page 2 of the "Regarding Signatures & Avatars" thread in the "Test Forum".

It should be noted that many signatures (my own included) have been exceeding the 3 line limit (or 60 pixels in height). When the size of the avatar increased to 80 pixels, and we lost the ability to use our themes, I felt matching the 80 pixel (4 line) height with the signatures was not unreasonable and increased the size of my signature.

I honestly don't think a 100 pixel height (5 line) maximum is unreasonable. It seems a fair trade off for the lack of themes, but that is strictly my personal opinion. The increases I've made have not officially been approved by Rivka.

Further up-date. You will notice that I no longer have an avatar as well. Just on spec, I tried to change it and ended up with the same message. While playing around with it, I noticed that the passwords didn't match for some reason, although I didn't change anything. The programme added 2 fields to it.

Unfortunately it doesn't matter what size the image is, the profile software doesn't work properly. The only answer is to use an external link. Don't forget to delete your avatar first, even if it's not showing.

Brilliant suggestion, tarc! Image I've noticed the box every time I've used the "Browse" method to change my avatar, but I never thought to give it a try ..... Image

So, further up-date: You can change your avatar as long as you upload it first to an image hosting site (I use Photobucket) which will provide you with a direct link URL for it which you can then place in the box located directly above the field allowing you to upload from your computer. Incidentally, this is the way we used to do it with the old, old programme.

I tried searching a member's username in the sidebar's Community>>Members List and the page just refreshes with no changes. I tried clicking on the titles to sort by username or date joined and it just refreshed. So I tried to do it the very hard way and click next at the bottom--it just refreshed x.x

It works for me If I search for your name I get two results. If I search for shield I get loads of results. Not only people with shield in the name but people who are interested in Agents of Shield. It searches the whole profile. You can also find people from a particular place.

The sort function doesn't seem to work though.

I tried to up load a avatar from my computer, but I got a image size warning and the picture would not show. I see that others have had problems with changing their avatars, but I am new and have never had one.
Next I tried using the URL for a photo in my Drop Box. That didn't work either So I tried uploading a photo to Flickr and using the URL Flickr gave me for the photo and it is still not working. I also tried this from a image in my signature, the image only shows as a "broken image" icon.
Any ideas?

Did you delete your avatar in your profile? It's that red disc with the white bar. The URL should be a standard form, e.g. http://s20.postimg.org/6oit99uj1/the_eye001.jpg (that's mine)
No pointy brackets or anything. If you grab the HTML on flickr you can edit out all the other bits.

To put an image in your sig use the standard HTML tag -
<img src="http://s20.postimg.org/j1vng6k7d/celtic_dog_avatar.jpg">
or the HTML link provided by hosting site. It has to have the file name at the end.

To show images in a forum post use the straight URL as before, highlight it then click the image icon.

I did delete my avatar. I am not sure if my URL has any brackets, but I will check. I know some HTML from a web design class, but I forget if the URL for my sig had the file name at the end.

Dropbox isn't much use for this sort of thing. It always links to a dropbox webpage instead of just the image.
Use flickr and copy the HTML link
There's a few others like tinypic and photobucket but I use postimage.org as it is designed just for posting images on forums.

I've tried everything, and all I'm getting is 4 messages saying the same thing:

Yeah, that's 'cos Itarilde is now using postimg.org instead of trying to upload it.
I can thoroughly recommend Palemoon web browser or if not Firefox. There's all sorts of extra stuff you can do, like right click an image and choose 'View Image Info', apart from all the cool webtools as well.

Be sure to use, when uploading from a photo storing site like Photobucket, the DIRECT LINK, and not the IMG or HTML.

Here is what the DIRECT LINK for my new avi is.

Hi, have there been any issues with accounts being created? One of my friends is trying to join the site, but has not been able to do so. Even if the names are not listed in the user list and she makes changes to spelling, once she tries to login an error message comes back "Username invalid" or "contains unauthorized characters."

Dolwen, if a person can't log in they can't send a PM.

lizandroll, I'm guessing you mean that your friend can't register. You will have to contact gwendeth telling her the username to see if there's anything she can do.

Yes, after 11 years here, I know that. It was nothing more than a simple typo as I meant to type "you" instead of "she" which is what I was thinking when I wrote it. Regardless of my mistake, the fact remains the same, that gwendeth is the person needing to be contact so you both just repeated what I said to begin with.

i'm new here so i'm not sure if this is where i should say this, but the sindarin soundfiles redirects to a domain that is up for sale. if anyone knows anything or how to fix it could you please tell me?

Did anyone else have connectivity issues yesterday? I had error messages off and on.

The error message is

"Error establishing a database connection"

Yeah, I was getting the same message, Gando. Sometimes I was able to switch forums and sometimes I couldn't. It's all fine today.

I think it has been happening to everyone over the last few days. If you keep refreshing it will usually get you where you want to go but it sure is annoying.

Well, it has had one positive effect for me. When I got annoyed enough, I changed Firefox tabs to Wikipedia and doodled my way through various subjects that spontaneously seemed interesting to me.
