Ula sat in the row of chairs at the front of the long meeting hall with the other teachers lined up beside her. Her soft blue eyes, full of memory, stared at something invisible to others as students slowly filed in. Her chin rested in her hand as her long, dark blonde hair shaded her young, fair face. She was back in her childhood, with her sister. She didn’t notice when the flow of arrivals had stopped until the woman next to her nudged her. Ula suddenly noticed the stillness of the room and stood to speak. Her pale gray robes rustled about her.
“Welcome to the Sanctuary,” her voice filled the room, surprisingly normal for all the power she held, “You all already know what this place is, but I suggest you find someone acquainted with it to show you how to get around. There is only one rule, as we trust you to govern yourselves. Do not go into any of the chambers housing the gems without myself with you. If you can not follow this rule, or in any other way act inappropriately, then you will immediately be banished. There will be no warnings. Classes will begin tomorrow, so ask about the classes. You may find a room to stay in now.”
She smiled and began making her way to the exit at the back of the room. Students picked up varying sizes of parcels and began crowding their way out.

Iris studied Ula through tired eyes as she spoke. She had travelled far and fast to arrive at the school on time and a weariness hung over her. Not entirely hearing the words, she was startled when everyone started to leave the room. I better find someone who knows where to go around here she thought. She stood up, smoothed the front of her dark dress and adjusted the light travelling cloak she wore over it. Aprocahing a student who was gathering their things, she said "Excuse me, but would you mind showing me around. My name is Iris."

Drego had traveled a long way, and was extreamly tired, for he had traveled through the night. When he finally got inside, he was the last one, and was afraid he would interrupt the other students, so quietly he took a seat in the back. He listened intently to Ula's speech. He had been here before, a little before the term had started, so he knew where he was to go afterward. Once Ula had finished, he started to gather his things when he was approached by another student.

"Excuse me, but would you mind showing me around? My name is Iris." Said the young woman standing in front of him.

"Hello, Iris, my name's Drego." Drego held out his hand and she shook it. "I wouldn't mind showing you where to go, I have been here before, so I might be able to help you. Although, I don't know where everything is, but I know where the rooms are. If that's where your headed." He smiled at her, he had an odd sense that they would be friends this year, and he always did have a knack for knowing things.

The pale skin of Iris' face turned a light pink. She had not noticed how hansome Drego until he turned around to face her.
"That would be wonderful. Thank you," she said, a little shy as she usually was around anyone. She gave him an embarassed smile and waited for his lead.

Drego haden't noticed Iris blush, as he was very tired. He yawned and finished picking up all his things. He walked over to the door where she was waiting for him.

"Are you ready?" He asked, stupidly, as he had noticed that she had all of her things and was waiting for him by the door. When she nodded, he smiled, he wanted to get to know her, but she looked tired, as if she was straining to keep her eyes open, so he fought himself from asking her questions. Drego, as he had grown up around many fine gentlemen, offered her his arm and escorted her out of the room.

They walked down the corridor and turned left at the first corner, and right at the next. They passed a big room filled with grand tables, and several smaller rooms on each side of the hall. He walked with her through a rather large door and turned left. They had turned into a smaller hallway, which was brightly lit with many candles.

"That way is the boys rooms," He was pointing towards the large door on the left. "and this door..." He pointed towards the door exactly opposite of the first door he pointed out. "is the way to the girls rooms. Do I have to pick a room out for you?" He smiled as she shook her head timidly. "So just go in there and pick yourself out a room that hasn't already been taken." He opened the door for her and she walked inside. "Oh, and Iris, do you know where to go in the morning?" He asked.

Blushing once again, Iris said "No, I don't. Would you mind meeting me here in the morning? I usually get up quite early."
Drego nodded and smiled. Waving goodbye, Iris turned and walked down the hall looking for an empty room. When she found one, she dropped her bag with a thud and fell onto the bed, not even bothering to close the door behind her. As she drifted into sleep, her thoughts returned to Drego and she smiled.

Drego watched Iris walk away and sighed, there was something about her that he liked, but he couldn't figure out if that was good or bad. He saw her dissapear into a room and turned to find a room of his own. He pushed through the door on the left and dragged his things through. He had to travel nearly the entire legnth of the hall to find a room that was empty, for the first three were locked, and the fourth room had no windows.

The fifth was fine, and it was only a little smaller then his room at his parents house. Although Drego was very tired, he went to the closet and emptied most of his clothes onto the shelves, and was able to put his staff in a decent place, hiding from the three windows. he took off his shoes and then collapsed on his bed, falling asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow.

Drego's dream took him back to the day that the English soilders found his brother playing with his fathers staff. He relived every detail, even when he attended his small brother's beheading. He woke up with a start as the axe dropped, and fell out of the bed. He was sweating and as he looked in he mirror he saw he was pale, and he was still shaking.

Drego looked out the window and saw it was sunrise, he would never be able to sleep now. Quickly, he stripped of his wet robes, and threw on some fresh ones, they were a sky blue, and he walked out of his room, forgetting to wear his hat. He was halfway down the hallway when he remembered, and he ran back. He rummaged through his hat drawer and pulled out his matching hat. Smiling at the mirror, color flushed back into his face, as he tried to forget the dream, he managed to think about something else for the moment.

When he emerged from the large door, he saw Iris was waiting for him by her the other door. Drego smiled as he saw her waiting and put his staff in his left hand and offered her his right.

Ula didn't sleep that night. She spent it sitting in the dining hall, where everyone was to gather in the morning for breakfast. She watched the moon travel across the sky through the large stained-glass ceiling, and then watched the sun peek over the horizon. She couldn't shake an uncomfortable feeling, like something foreign had found its way into her body. So she sat rigidly in the chair wondering what was wrong, unable to sleep for fear of what she would see. Then the large doors at the other end of the room opened to admit a pair of students and she pretended to relax. She didn't want to let on to the fact that something was wrong just yet.

Iris woke up feeling relaxed and peacful. She put on her favorite dress, dark blue with silver threadwork, and fixed her long black hair as best as she could. Then she headed out of her room.

She found the hall where Drego had left her the night before and settled herself onto a bench that faced the door to the boys' rooms. She didn't have long to wait before Drego came out of the door dressed in sky blue robes. His staff was an object of interest to Iris who had no experience in any kind of magic or anything of the sort. She made a point to ask him about it later.

Taking the hand that he offered, Iris followed Drego down halls and past rooms all of which she seemed to see for the first time and with a new and wonderful feeling about them.
They entered the dining hall through large and ornate doors. It took Iris a moment to see that Ula sat at the other end of the room.

As Drego led Iris into the great dining hall he let go of her arm. He walked straight over to Ula and bowed his head. "Mistress Ula, I have come to ask you of the classes." He said, and sat as she offered him a seat. Once he sat down, he noticed Iris had followed him over, and shyly took the seat next to him. He snapped back to attention as Ula started to speak, but noticed there was something strange in her gaze, but unable to figure out what it could be, he said nothing of it.

"What would you like to know about them?" Ula asked Drego in return, "There will be classes on gem control, hand magic, thought magic and, of course, staff magic."
She still couldn't quite shake the feeling that something was off in her school.

"Well," Drego said, eyeing his staff. "What do you think, should I start off on something I know something of, or something completely new to me?" Drego tried to understand her gaze. "Or, I could always do more then one, right?" He turned to Iris, "What about you, what are you here to take?"

Iris thought about the question for a moment. "This whole world is new to me," she said. "I would like to try a little bit of everything if I can and see what I am best at."

"I think that's a great idea." Drego smiled at Iris, and then turned back to Ula. "Um, but i think I would like to learn more about gems before learning to control them. So, if it is possible, could I take classes on hand magic, staff magic, and thought magic before taking gem control, I think I shall try that next year." He looked to Ula, comtemplating what he thought her answer would be.

"I would suggest taking gem control along with staff magic, as they are closely related," Ula answeredm "And for you, Iris, I would suggest taking hand magic and staff magic. I'm sure Drego and I could find a suitable staff for you. I believe you would be good at it."
Ula smiled reassuringly at Iris, remembering the feeling of uncertainty.
"And if you have any questions about anything at all, don't be afraid to ask a teacher or student."

"Thank you," said Iris. "I think I will try those classes then."
A sudden feeling struck Iris that there was something wrong with the headmaster. There was something odd about her smile. You're probably just imagining things she thought. Then again, she thought she was 'imagining' magic before she came here.

"Well, you know about magic more then I, so I shall go along with your judgement. So then, about thought magic, shall I have time enough to fit it in this year? For I believe that will be the most challenging for me, I am rather thin on patience. That is why my father sent me here, he could not teach me much when I cant sit still long enough for him, he got angry during my lessons, and he gave up." Drego searched her eyes, hoping to find the reason, but stopped, as she was doing a good job in covering it up. He was about to ask her about it and then stopped short, and realized it would be rude for him to engage her in conversation that would no doubt be very uncomfortable for her. So he took to just listening to her advice, nodding every so often.

"If you would like to do that this year, then I will not stop you," Ula advised, "It depends on how difficult you find your other classes. And I believe we may be in for a surprise or two this year."
She grinned at him, just barely and only for a moment, but it was visible.

"A surprise?" Drego asked, looking bewildered. Then, gaining his stamina, he continued. "Well, that's good, I hate to be bored." He noticed her smile had not been as bright as it should have been, and read worry in her eyes. "But are you sure it won't be a sad and horrible surprise?" He continued, trying to get her to voice her worries. He turned to Iris and noticed she had gone a little pale, and was shaking slightly.

Trying to get her to calm down, Drego put his arm around her and whispered. "Don't you worry, Iris, I won't let anything happen to you." He said, as now he hoped they were friends, and, isn't that what friends did? He was slightly shocked when she blushed and thought he went a little to far. He moved his arm off his shoulder, but then smiled, and she seemed to get the point. She stopped blushing and was able to look him in the eyes and smile in a friendly mannor. He turned back to Ula, who wouldn't look him in the eyes. NOw he knew she was worried about something. "I have another question, professor, I was wondering how long the classes are, like, are they every day, once a week, or what? And also, are there more then one class on each subject?"
