I love the swords from LOTR, but to have a full outfit, you need armor. Does anyone know about how to make your own chainmail(I read somewhere about 4-in-1 being better than 6-in-1, and am really confused ). Also, does anyone know an alternative to hsields other than wood? I'd like to make one, but I don't have the equipment to make it with wood.

Hi Glamdring,

I've dealt fairly extensively with maille before. Search on google for chain maille tutorials and you will find lots of stuff. 4 in 1 isn't necessarily better than 6 in 1. 6 in 1 uses more rings and is therefore heavier and a fair bit more likely to protect you. It of course takes much longer to make. There is also an 8 in 1 patter which is great stuff. It works well for specific areas that need maximum protection.

For shields many people use metal. I'm guessing that you don't have the equipment for metal though (as it's even harder and more expensive than wood working tools). Other than that there really isn't an alternative. You could go modern I guess and build a polycarbonate shield or something.

Quick thought on the shield side of things

If you dont want to go the wood route then something like sintra ( if it's called sintra where you are ) which can be shaped with heat and holds it's shape might be a alternative for you, but only if it's just for show.
Best to wear a mask when cutting it though

http://home.clara.net/arianrhod/Aldebaran/DoItYourself/ I am not sure how much they have on amour, but anyway a good one...
http://milieux.com/costume/ I am told this is a good one, have not visited it myself.
http://www.feudalarchers.org.uk/ group that base themselvs in around 1200
http://www.regia.org/ same only, anglo-saxon, viking and norman...

If these does not fit, feel free to ask me and I might be able to do some research, can't promise anything... School you know...

I made a shield in art class once out of a big wooden bowl I bought at...uhm...I think it was Pier 1. Or somewhere like that. Anyway, I got some leather scrap from the cobbler's shop in town and sewed it together, then lined the inside with linen. I think it turned out well enough (I got an 'A' on it, at any rate ), and I didn't have to use any carpentry skills, which is good 'cause mine are practically non-existant.

As far as chain mail goes, I've made two hauberks and a coif out of it. I got my rings pre-cut from this guy: http://www.theringlord.com/index.shtml

A bit expensive, but it was a lot more appealing than cutting all those rings out myself. One note: If you're using pliers to bend the metal, wrap the handles with yarn- it's a lot more comfortable and you don't get as many blisters.

Hello all! I've recently aquired an addiction to chain maille but I'm not sure how to make a vest of it that both looks nice and it lightwieght. My idea is to use soda can tabs, glued to a vest... Will this work? Here is EXACTLY what I'm planning to do.
1) Make the vest (easy enough)
2) Hot glue each tab to the fabric.
Yes, this will be time consuming. It's called a "Winter Project" for a reason. I just don't want to work for several months on something that may end up looking horrible. Has anyone done this before, or something similar? Pictures and advice apprectiated!

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. I also read somewhere that for long distance costumes, you can spay paint a loosely knitted sweater gray and rust.
