Post Cardmaking and scrapbooking

I recently got interested in making my own cards and also in scrapbooking/journalling - you should have seen my room yesterday, with card and glitter and punches and all sorts spread out around the room! I'm in the middle of making Christmas cards, and I'm beginning to run out of ideas! I'm sure there must be loads of people who make their own cards - anyone got any tips?

Hi Elyiocyla

I also make my own cards. I started Chrismas cards some time ago but still have a few to go. I use various bits and bobs. Sticky gift labels often make a good basis for a card as do samll window decorations the ones made of acetate type stuff. Also I have loads of rubber stamps. Circles of peper or card coloured to like like tree baubles is another good look. Also if anyone has sent me a card I particularly like I try to re-create it with a few variations - this works best with simple motifs. Shopping channels are a good source of ideas and inspiration as well as materials I use QVC a lot - dont know if you can get it where you are.

Regards

Thanks HT

I've been getting more ambitious and trying to give some of my cards an LOTR theme... without using images from the films... it's interesting!

Stamps can be really handy, I've got a few choice ones (my favourites being the alphabet ones!). I keep an eye on the shopping channels (I do have QVC I think) but I've never actually used them as yet.

Hi there,

I do not really make Cards all that often, although my mum does and I help her sometimes. I have a pack to make some Christmas cards for my friends, so I shall be starting on that soon!

As to inspiration, I would recommend QVC. It is a very good shopping channel. Also I don't know whether you have this but Create and Craft is another good one. It is part of the Ideal World shopping channel, but it has a separate channel. Create and Craft is a specialised crafting channel and it has a lot of great demonstraters and products. If you do have Create and Craft I would strongly advise to watch Dawn Bibby. She is an excellent cardmaker, and has really good, modern ideas. Check to see if she is on tv some time, because she is great!

I don't think we do have any, no, not in the multimedia section anyway. Maybe you should suggest it in the Announcements forum

Ooh yes I love making cards... I'm making a Christmas card for my close friend at the moment.

I've found that a combination of pressed flowers / leaves, black calligraphy writing and a good gold pen touch up works very well.
Also, you get those... tiny little foamy things that are sticky on both sides, those thingymabobs. I find that you can achieve a great 3D effect with those, as in you place some on the paper and then place another paper, smaller, on top. :dizzy: Sorry if I don't make too much sense! Basically, layers and sometimes 3D works very well.

I could go on forever about ideas for cards and whatnot but I'll shut up for now. But I'd love to hear some other peoples ideas!

Some nice ideas for christmas cards are to get those snowflake sequin things and stick them onto the front of a creamy coloured card. From there you build up a picture in the middle, layering with pale blue and silver. Then you can put a black and white image of snow or children playing in the snow or something. My mum did that a while back, when she got the initial idea from Dawn Bibby ( ) but then she changed it slightly. It made a really nice and professional looking card!

Have you tried looking out for cardmaking magazines? I don't know where you're from but in England we have Paper Craft, Do Crafts and Paper Crafting and Scrapbooking or something like that. Also see if there are any websites, those usually inspire my mum's cards!

Also a great way to recycle old cards is to keep any messages on the front of them. Like Seasons Greetings and Happy Birthday to use on other cards, because you can just layer them onto different coloured card using 3d foam pads and then it'll look really nice! Also look out for images from old cards too!

ABotS, I think you are referring to 3D foam pads. They help with decoupage and layering! They're really useful and add dimension to your cards!

Need anymore help? Then don't hesitate to give me a shout!

Thanks guys Keep 'em coming!

I really should try pressed flowers, ABotS... I've got skeleton leaves, which are great for effect, but hadn't really considered that!

Arwen, I'm from England too so I get the same magazines - I have a few but they're so expensive! I spend ages agonizing over which ones to get, and it's usually pretty much decided on the basis of which one has the best free gift! My boyfriend says he's going to take out a subscription for me as a Christmas present though, so that's quite exciting.

I really like the way layers can be so effective, I'm looking out for some nice vellum and transparenty paper at the moment to make it more interesting! My mum keeps all her Christmas cards with the intention of reusing bits, but somehow it doesn't usually happen!

I haven't really experimented with decoupage yet, I got some decoupage images but haven't got round to using them. Any tips on how's best to do that?

Thanks everyone! And ABotS, please go on!

Oh well, only cause you insist.

AHA!! Yes that's what they're called... I actually just found the cover of the packet yesterday, and that's what they were called... thanks. What I have done is on just plain white card, you get another colour, cut it smaller with a nice border and stick it on the white with 3D foam pads. Then you put something nice on the front; like you said, reused bits of other cards and whatever else.

I like to get a few (like 3) complementing colours (say, silver, and 2 shades of blue) in paint, and then you dab the paint thorugh the holes in doilies, and 'layer' them a little; it looks really good.

Yeah the pressed flowers and gold worked a lot better than I expected! A few flowers here and there, and then I arranged the leaves and stems around the edge for a border, and gold touches.

I really liked some of those ideas that you guys posted!

Oooh, I think I shall have to invest in some doilies... it sound like fun!

One of my favourites of the cards I've made so far this year is just a really simple one, plain white card with purple snowflakes of different sizes and Happy Christmas in silver - I love stickers! Those nice outline ones are so good for writing. I think text can be one of the hardest things to get right with cardmaking - I have loads and loads of sheets of stickers and transfers, because cutting letters out or doing themselves so often just looks bad and it takes so long! But I also have a set of alphabet stamps, which are good, although it's difficult to get them positioned right. Any other tips for writing?

Have any of you made your own scrapbook-- I mean like the paperbag scrapbook where you literaly make your own book.

I have found lots about making a paperbag scrapbook but i would like to learn how to make other kinds and other ways to bind books. I hope that makes sense

Pick me Pick me  I Love making my own scrapbooks, in fact of late, I've made so many books that I find I have nothing to put in them

I make them using a piece of card folded over for the cover, which I glue a thin piece of foam (to make it padded) and then I cover it with pieces of fabric, ribbons, lace, buttons etc. For the pages I've started using recycled home - made paper, which is another craft I've just really go into...I could go on for hours on this topic  How about you Rien? Have you made any books yet or have you just been researching??

Wow, thanks for the response so soon Lozadora.
No, i scrapbook and do cardmaking but i've never made my own scrapbook. I once saw the paperbag scrapbook and thought it was really cute. This weekend i was shopping and i saw a book on making scrapbooks and they were really neat but the book was a bit pricey for how thin it was. The book had some really neat ways to bind books, i would really like to know how to do that.
