Post Making Props (trees etc.)
on: November 27, 2005 09:19
Hello all. I have a very poorly lit apartment and since I don't want to starve plants to death I've decided to try and build an indoor forest.

I would like to build modular artificial trees that I could hang on the wall. Basically they would be made out of styrofoam or carved out of balsa wood to look like one half of a tree. As it nears the ceiling, I can use pipe insulation and cut it with a styrofoam cutter to make branches. Then after a paint job, I would get some artficial leafy vines and make twigs and leaves.

I guess I could just find a tree in the woods and add the leaves just as well, but the idea is to make this not as heavy.

Is this a dumb idea? I need a project to keep me sober.

I think its a great idea! If I had any room left on my walls, I'd really want to try it out!

Say thats a pretty neat idea... have you considered using sintra (I think that is the same stuff as Forex roam ?)?

Rest assured that I won't put goop on a living tree or any bugs. I'm also weird like that. Vegetarian going on 13 years now. And no it's not for health reasons!

Headcold, have you thought of making a form of florists clay and then using papermachette to cover it...?
When you trim the paper you can lift it off of the clay and it is very light.
Then if it is not stiff enough you can use florists wire to strengthen the paper
and paint and then add paper leaves to the form for more realism.
You can even get textured papers from plants that look and feel like fine bark.
Just a thought.

Namaste,
