Post All about signatures and how to make them!
on: March 31, 2007 01:21
“Hi, a lot of people have quotes from LOTR at the bottom of their comments, or reviews........How can I get That?”

If you are facing that question yourself, you have come to the right thread!

‘That’ is called a signature, and you can get one by reading this thread and following its guidelines. So let’s get busy!!

______________________________________________

Rules:

First of all, you have to keep these rules in mind:

1) Please keep signature files no more than a few lines long. Do not clutter up the forum with 10-line long sigs, or slow loading images. "A few" means no more than 2 - 3 lines.

2) Regarding images in the sig file -- Please limit your sig images to small ones. The 2 - 3 lines limit listed above also includes the size of your image -- if it's taller than 2 - 3 lines, then it's too big!

3) Avatars uploaded to the community pool are intended for everyone to use. Just because you name it with your username, or otherwise put your name on it graphically, does not mean other people can't use it.

These rules have a purpose: All of these images and extra text cause the forum to load slowly, especially for people on dial-up. In addition, all this extra lines and images in the sigs make the forum hard to read, and annoying.

You can find the original post about the signature-rules by Rivka here .

My Signature:

Now, to find the place where you can change your signature, you must click on “My Account” at the top of your screen. Then click on “Change your info”. Scroll down until you see the box that says Signature, and type what you want to see at the bottom of your posts in that box.

Images:

As you will have noticed, a lot of people have images in their signature, if you want one yourself in it, you should check out the following tips:

- You need to find an image. At CoE we ask that all images posted in signatures be no bigger than three lines of text in height. An acceptable height is about 30 pixels. If you need to you should resize your image to that approximate size. Also it must be either a .jpg or .gif to work.

- You then need to upload the image from your computer to the WWW, a link to where you can upload your pictures is given here.

- Now you can go to Signature on My Account as described above. Where it says signature, add <img src="img url"> where img url is the bit you copied from the properties of the image. It’s the link to the picture on the internet. (A bit more about finding the properties of your image is explained below.)

- Save the changes. You can try a post in the test forum here to see if it has worked.

Concerning the image url:
If you wish an image to appear in your sig or in a post you need to use the address to tell the computer where the image is.

However for other people to be able to view the image it must be uploaded to the www as told above, if it is only on your computer in my documents or my pictures only you will see it.

If you uploaded the image to the CoE-imageupload, you will be given the img url there. If you use an image somewhere online (that is not too big!), you can find it this way:

- hover the mouse pointer over the image and right click, this should bring up this panel:

Image

- at the bottom left click properties and that should bring up this:

Image

- you may get the second panel only either way you can now see the address or image url of the picture.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Formatting your signature-style:

Changing colour:

To get colour, you can either use html or bbcode. Html is better, as bbcode doesn't really work in some places. For bbcode, you can find the codes here.
Html is more reliable, but a lot more complicated. You can find some codes here as well as some links to sites which with colour codes etc.

Remember, not all colours will be as visible on all themes. For example, you won't really be able to see green on the Legolas or Rivendell themes.

Concerning alignment:

To put a picture next to the text in the signature, on the same lines, you can try this (in html code):

<img src="Your img url here" align="left">

This will make the picture be aligned to the left, with the text besides it, if you put this code before the text!

Note: make sure there is a space between the last ‘ “ ‘and the word align. You don't need to hit enter before you enter text after the code.

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Internet-links:

To insert links into your signature, so that it reads 'here' or something else and not http://www.blahblahblah...........com, you should try this:

Type [%url=YOUR_LINK_GOES_HERE] YOUR_TEXT_GOES_HERE [%/url], but remove the 2 '%' signs and insert your link and text in stead of the text in capitals. Your final result will look like this: YOUR_TEXT_GOES_HERE (keep in mind this link doesn't go anywhere, it's an example).

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Problems:
If you are having problems removing your sig or if it isn’t working:

First you need to change it in "my account" then "change your info".... then if it doesn’t change, go to "forum" then "profile" and change it in there. Press ctrl and refresh and then if it’s still not changed, you need to check your cookies.

Go to tools, then internet options, choose "general" and delete your temporary cookies and temporary internet files. This will also log you out of CoE.

Now... your signature should be working, if not then go and change it in "my account" then "change your info" again... if that doesn’t work, contact gondolinian (the Newbies-forum moderator).

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

I hope all of this helps. If you have any further questions, feel free to post any replies in this thread, or to check out the archives files. There might be some helpful post there too, but most of it should be in all the above .

Enjoy!!

gondolinian, this is an excellent post!!

I would just add that there is a thread where folks can 'test' their sig in the Test Forum here, and anyone having problems is also welcome to send me a Private Message and I'll do my best to help.

PS: I did mention the testforum in my post : "Save the changes. You can try a post in the test forum here to see if it has worked." So don't worry, haven't forgotten bout that .
Thanks to let the newbies know you're the one to pm concerning sigs and accounts . The help is more than welcome I think.

Hi

I think you might need to put " around the 'left' in the code try that.
I would also like to point out there's a test-forum where you can try out your sig or avie, the link is in the original post in this thread.

It appears not, and the url to your image seems to be bad. You must make sure you put the following code in your sig:

but replace the [Your img url here] with the proper url, and keep the " in place. But please do use the testforum for your sig, it's made for that purpose This thread is for questions and solutions.

I wonder how I can align my realm insignia to the right? I tried wrapping the link in the alignment code I found in the formating your signature paragraph, but the insignia didn't budge from its place next to my sig image.. I'd be grateful for any help with that :/

Hi nolemë, can you send me a pm with the code you used in your sig when you last tried (and when the insignia didn't budge)? Don't forget to use underscores in the actual 'codewords' or your text will not show up as code but as images in the pm. I'll try to see what the problem is .

Hi Frodo~the~Second,

First of all, no need to add stars to emphasize every word . It only makes the sentence harder to understand.

As an answer to your question: moving images (whether in a signature or as avatar) are actually .gif images. Once you have one, you can upload it in the same way as any other image, as described above. For info on how to make them, I'd suggest Googling it since it can be done in many ways with many programs, which is too lengthy to explain here.
One suggestion though: moving and especially blinking images make posts quite difficult to read, it distracts the reader. So it is not advisable to put such images in your signature or avatar.

I hope this clarified things a bit. If not, let me know.

Hi Hurion and welcome to CoE. To add a signature look at the top of this page and you should see several choices such as Inbox, show topics since last visit etc. Choose the Edit forum options to add your signature.

Hey, I'm having trouble with the link to change my signature; every time I click "change forum options" it takes me to the page where I should be able to change it, but there's nothing there, it just says forum.

Any help, please?

Hi Simbelmyne_Of_Rohan,

At the moment we're experiencing difficulties with that particular page. Our site owner is trying to sort it out as soon as possible). Until then: hang in there!

Moonshine, at the top of the page there is an "Edit your forum options" button. You would click on that, and there is a box in which you can type what ever quotes you wish. But unfortunately, that part of the site is not currently working. Although, the site is undergoing a few changes which should clear up the problems.

We no longer have the image upload program, ElfwithAtatude... It was a place here where we could upload our own photos, but with the advent of sites such as Flickr, it was dropped from CoE.
