Post III.24 Of The Voyage of Earendil And The War of Wrath

1) Why was Morgoth so far off in his judgment of whether his kindred, the Valar, would ever come and oppose him on Middle-earth?

2) When Vingilot was seen in the sky, it became know as Gil-Estel. Do we have an equivalent in our own skies?

3) Why would the Elves of Beleriand settle on Tol Eressea rather than Valinor?

Morgoth and the Valar were two opposing forces. In the chapter "Of the Voyage of Earendil" it says of Morgoth for to him that is pitiless the deeds of pity are ever strange and beyond reckoning.

Because of the Noldor leaving Valinor for Middle Earth, he presumed within himself that the Valar would have no regard for the events that were taking place in Middle earth.

Earendil on behalf of the Noldor, elves and men presents a petition of pardon, pity and mercy before the Powers of Arda and this is granted.

Earendil probably was "the longed for that cometh beyond hope!

I agree with the second post and is the planet venus.

3) Why would the Elves of Beleriand settle on Tol Eressea rather than Valinor?

Perhaps it had something to do with the elves seeking a bit of independence away from the Valar.
