Why did E~S ask the above question "Why did Bilbo take Sting from Smaug's hoard?" when Bilbo actually got Sting from the cave of the Trolls?

I wondered about that at the time I posted it. It seemed wrong but ..... Image

By that time they had been away from Hobbiton for quite a while, and Bilbo had not left behind only his hanky. He desperately needed something to trim his nails (on hands and - oh my dear, I hardly want to think about it - feet!).

Why did Thorin II Oakenshield give Bilbo the immensely valuable mithril-coat?

He mistook it for an old discarded dwarvish coat made of steel.

Why did Bilbo agree to become the "burglar" of the group?

Because he has been prescribed a special cream for the terrible eczema he has on his hands, and it works better if he wears gloves after applying it.

Because they mistook it for a long-lost cousin.

Why did Frodo leave Middle-Earth?
If anyone had happened to look out of a window on the east side of the palace, they might have noticed two figures in the darkness, dancing in a square bordered by living plants, out of time with the dancers inside but perfectly in time with each other.

Because he foresaw that Sam and Rosie were going to have so many kids, turning Bag End into something resembling Brandy Hall, and he did not need any more of THAT!

He hoped that if he saw Galadriel again she would give him more hairs and he could start making a wig.

He had been the crown prince of Thranduil's realm for ages and was just sick and tired of it. With Sauron gone, even the normally remote chance of Elvish crown princes ascending to a throne just had gotten ridiculously improbable.

Actually, the couldn't care less about gold itself. But they know that others covet gold, and they just get so much of a thrill out of burning those who enter theirs hoards for the gold to a black crisp.

*SHRIEK*

Why does Smaug (rightly) have arms as wings in DoS (the movie) instead of the usual dragon depiction with four legs and bat wings as an addition?

He may be part Belgian.
I say part because as a full Belgian (according to the most successful comics in Europe, Asterix - and perhaps other sources) the Belgians are the inventors of the wrongly named French fries (OK, so that is probably an insignificant difference to Americans, who, despite 126 years of increasingly desperate efforts of National Geographic, remain the most geographically challenged nation on earth where National Geographic is sold).

Why does Gollum prefer his meals raw?

(Now please do not tell me that you are surprised that I like to blab!!!)

They were so mad at him for causing Frodo (& Sam) to cross the river without them that they were speculating that the Falls of Rauros would leave nothing to be recognized by anyone after arriving at the bottom of the falls.

Why do Aragorn and Company decide to follow the Orcs who had captured Marry an Pippin instead of following Frodo and Sam?

... really, I had noticed *sarcasm included for free*

Two reasons: a) Gimli was terrified of water, having almost tipped over the flimsy boat he was riding in on several occasions; and b) they were hungry and Legolas said the hunting would be better if they followed the Orc's trail, assuming they would have stirred up all of the fauna during their passing.

Why did they decide to accept the horses that Éomer offered them even though Gimli was afraid of them?

Why doesn't the fellowship just fly over Mordor on eagles and drop the ring in Mount Doom on the way?

Because the Eagles, while being easily able to out-fly the Nazgûl's flying lizards, they could not stand those creatures' abominable stench (eagles have an acute sense of smell). So the Nazgûl's flying lizards would simply have to hang around Mount Doom to cause any and all eagles attempting to fly there to abandon the attempt suffering from severe vomiting.

Why didn't the Nazgûl simply fly to Hobbiton on their flying lizards?
