I am not sure Gollum can be trusted but I still would have him as a guide.

Would you rather make swords in Gondolin or mine for jewels in Erebor?

Making swords need the knowledge of a highly trained smith. So hacking away at the walls of mines seems more compatible with my skills.

Just thinking about Beowulf, which is "only" about 1500 years ago (the time it is supposed to take place, not the time it was written down).
And Beren is roughly 6500 years before Aragorn? In a time when Morgoth still was the Dark Lord ...

If you could change one huge part of Arda's history, would you rather keep Morgoth from destroying the Trees, or make sure the Ring was destroyed in the Second Age?
