In an effort to create more opportunities to actively practice Quenya, the idea was put forth to play card games while speaking in only Elvish.

Taking this to heart, I have compiled a list of words and phrases in Quenya that could conceivably be used in a common game of "Magic the Gathering" or "Yugioh" or various other trading card games.

If anybody has any corrections or better words / phrases, please post a reply to this.

Update 11-15-15: This idea appears to be really effective for beginning speakers. Myself and others have started gaming groups; success stories keep trickling back to me. Among my group, three other players have gained enough fluency (at least with phrases) in Quenya to play the majority of their Yugioh games almost entirely without English. This has even spread to other constructed languages such as Dovahzul ("Dragon-speak" ).

Simple phrases such as "I draw a card", "I end my turn", "Do you end your turn?", "I summon a creature" appear to be the easiest to start with. Don't bother translating the names of the cards themselves, at least to begin with. Have the players start with action sentences so they start to associate the phrases with actions, then build up the vocabulary with things like "defense mode" or "graveyard". This also introduces people to easy grammatical differences such as "I draw a card" versus "You draw a card".

The list below is also a bit outdated, more extensive listings have been created. I will be posting those when I can.

Update:

It was pointed out to me that my translation for shuffle more accurately translates to "many cut" as opposed to "many cuts". In the interest of accuracy, I have posted the proposed corrections below.

Following up on the list of words that can be used in card games:

Common Elements:

- Earth // Cemen
- Fire // Nár
- Water // Nén
- Wind // hwindë
- Light // cálë
- Dark // Morna
- Divine // Valya
- Spell // Curu
- Trap // Neuma

Common Types:

Type
- Normal // Sanya
- Fusion "associate" // otorno / osellë (male/female)

It is my ( probably wrong) understanding that the tengwar character "Thule" means breath/spirit/chi. As such, it seems ideal to use to allocate elements.

EG: Chi type: dark

...If I am wrong I think "Fëa" will work just as well.

There are two other terms which I have been unable to find good translations for. "Effect" and "Ritual". Are there terms already?

If there is not one for ritual yet, here is what I am currently using:

It is a very rough translation, so please forgive spelling errors, but also please point them out. I will post the intended English translation next.

As of yesterday, a successful game of go fish was played...MOSTLY in Quenya. It was awesome!
