Post Do you Rescue and/or foster pets?
on: March 23, 2014 06:18
Hi guys! I thought this would be a cool topic to have. as some of you know, my account was not working for almost 9 months, so i have not been very active on here for a long time. i have missed it all though! but i am back now, thanks to Rivka who kindly fixed my account so anyway, does anyone here have rescued cats or dogs or is fostering cats and dogs right now? does anyone have any handicapped pets? if so, what handicapped them?
I have a blind dog named Godiva, a 3 legged cat named Brave, and a bunny named Raspberry missing various toes! I also have 10 other cats besides Brave!
Thanks everyone!!

I prefer to get my pets by rescuing them. The only ones I ever bought from a pet store were 2 ferrets years ago and in some ways, it was a rescue - horrid conditions. My 2 kitties and dog are all ones we have gotten out of less than optimal situations. My horses were gotten to help the owners AND the horses when things got dicey money-wise (couldn't afford them any more and were considering selling them to hackers... and I don't mean computer nerds that get into computers either).

Six of the kitties I have are rescues. I tried fostering a mommy kitty and her four babies. That is how I ended up with 11 cats. I could not bear to part with my fosters so I just kept them. Ten are indoor cats and my Gandalf, who lives on the screened porch, does get out once in a while but does come back. One day, he won't.
My destiny is riding again, rolling in the rain, unwinding in the wind. My destiny is fighting again, secretly unwinding..what it was I was supposed to say...to say to you today.

We once took care of a young cat (not kitten anymore by far, but not fully grown either) for a couple of days a couple of years ago. I had noticed it (him, as it turned out) mewing, sounding a bit juvenile, and darting around on our lawn-meadow in a somewhat random and seemingly playful way. As it was already dark and the forecast was for below zero (C, 32 F) during the night, I decided to have a look. He came trotting up, and purred when I picked him up. So we now have a cat litter box and transport box. We posted "cat found" notices at several houses (this is multi-family area) and the lady who was cat-sitting the little rascal for her daughter turned up soon. He rarely used the litter box, and noticeably had slight diarrhea, which is why we bought the transport box to take him to a vet. "Mommy" turned up before that.

He had gotten in the habit of hopping on my bed in the (for me) fairly early morning, and when I finally was awake enough to pay attention to him our noses almost touched. Message clear: "Feed me". Regular little Garfield, though wrong color (shades of grey lengthwise) and definitely a much lower weight class.

I rescued a kitten last year. She almost died, but didn't, now she's 18 mos.

Wow, lots of foster people. My family rescues Border Collie and Australian Shepherd puppies. We have been doing it for a bit over a year now, and have fostered 40-50 dogs and puppies in that time.

One of my personal favorites was a double merle aussie baby named Gatsby. This sweet boy was solid white, and a product of irresponsible breeding. We got him and his two litter mates this past spring. Gatsby and his brother were both blind and deaf, while his sister was perfectly normal. The reason why I loved Gatsby so much was even though Gatsby could neither see nor hear, he did not let that stop him. He would play hide and seek in the yard, using his incredible sense of smell to find you. He loved people, and would just sit in your arms all day, if you let him. He stole all of our hearts. He is now happily living in South Carolina with his new family.
