Post Darkest of Days
on: September 21, 2014 06:50
Greetings all!

I've been mulling over ideas for a new thread recently and now I feel prepared to start it up since the other RP I am GMing has stagnated. Hopefully I can find sent interested folks and keep it from that same fate. (;

The story is to be very loosely scripted in hopes that our combined creative powers can move the plot along nicely. Combat will be involved at varying degrees depending on your character (will elaborate more later), but I also would like to have some dynamic character interaction and progression and struggle. I don't have any expectations for skill, style, or length of posts so everyone is welcome to join.

...

The Kingdom of Arnor is in shambles. On all fronts the once unassailable fortresses of the Northern Kingdoms are crumbling against the endless onslaught of orc chieftains and their fell minions. It is a dark hour for the last remnants of Arnor; those who are not killed in battle are taken by plague and sickness. One such faction, Arthedain, is particularly beset against overwhelming odds. This is where your character resides, either a battle-hardened ranger, a skilled Elven healer from Imladris sent for aid (or anywhere practical), a struggling tradesman or other merchant, or whatever character you create that can rationally be in Arthedain during its downfall. As such, this will be TR.

Our tale should begin in Arthedain and deal with the daily struggles up to the very downfall of the Northern Kingdom and then proceed to the fleeing of the North, the last ditch efforts elsewhere and progress to the small pockets of Dunedain organizing to protect the rest of Breeland and the Shire from evil.

I will work up a character sheet for my character and provide more details on the story as well later this evening or tomorrow. As I said, this is only loosely scripted so we as a group will drive the plot.

For now, hopefully this garners some interest and feel free to hash out a character if you have one in mind.

You got my interest here. I take it this will be based in the days of King Arvedui around third age 1974 and before?

I'll post my character profile shortly and hope I don't curse the thread.
Eighth King of Arthedain - It was in battle that I come into this Kingship, and it will be in Battle when I leave it. There is no peace for the Realm of Arnor. Read the last stand of Arthedain in the Darkest of Days.

Ah, good to see I've netted you for this one Arveleg!
You are correct, as well.

I'm thinking we will begin exactly in the year T.A. 1974 perhaps a few months prior to the Witch-King invading Arthedain. This is a very eventful time in M.E. lore.

T.A. 1974 - Witch-King invades Arthedain.
T.A. 1975 - Battle of Fornost; Witch-King defeated, driven from the North. Remnants of the Northern Kingdoms become the Rangers of the North. Aranarth named Chieftain of the Dunedain.

Although the plague actually occurred about 300 years prior, we can assume it is NOW for the sake of the thread. Dramatic!

We will eventually progress to the invasion and fall of Fornost leading to the retreat across the Lune to the Grey Havens (or we could first fall back to the borders of The Shire across the Brandywine and maybe have a quick Gandalf cameo?). This will build up to the reinforcements arriving from Gondor and the Battle of Fornost.

After the Battle of Fornost, we can slow down quite a bit for the RP. The Fall of Fornost and the Battle can be treated as an intro of sorts. Afterwards, our company will set out on multiple missions. First, we will go far to the north to retrieve the Ring of Barahir from the Lossoth. True to lore, this will be a barter or other deal. Upon it's retrieval, our company will return to Aranarth and then be responsible for escorting the Ring and Chieftain Aranarth's son Arahael to Rivendell to be raised in secrecy, as begins the tradition of the line of kings. This will be bending the lore a bit, as Arahael isn't born until T.A. 2012 and in the RP it will be around T.A. 1976 so as not to make too big of time jumps for our thread. Not a big deal.

We can figure out more from here if the thread lasts this long as I think we already have a sufficient game plan. (:

I am in the process of brushing up on this particular chunk of lore, so please correct me in the chance I err and I will do my best.

Oh this sounds very interesting. How about a young Ranger, eager to earn his place among the Rangers and please his father?

Davian Crowe
Gender: Male
Race: Dunedain.
Height/Body: Roughly 6 feet, several inches; lordly stature.
Age: 28, born in the year T.A. 1946.
Location: Davian was born in Bree, but was raised into adolescence on the shores of Lake Evendim.
Family: His father, Castellan Crowe, has become a prominent member of the Dunedain and trusted advisor to King Arvedui in his old age. His mother passed in childbirth. No siblings.
Weapons: In the tradition of his kin, Davian was taught to be proficient in archery from a young age and this was supplemented by the honing of his meleee skills. As such, Davian typically arms himself for battle with his favored falchion and yew short-bow.
Personality: Davian was brash and arrogant as a young man, but grew quickly into the stoic and determined individual many have found clad in a worn cloak deep into the wild. He became a man not only of philosophy but of duty.
Appearance: Emerald green eyes and a square jaw, hair of chestnut brown cut quite short and relatively tame with a well-trimmed beard of similar color. Davian is strong of stature and powerfully built like many of his seasoned kin. Lines of worry have creased the corners of his eyes even at his young age, matching the creases from nose to the edge of his lips from many hearty bouts of laughter.
History: On the calm shores of Lake Evendim, flanked by the outstretched arms of the Emyn Uial and droves of tightly clustered forests, had sprouted a small community of adventurous folk of Arthedain looking to escape the trade and bustle of Fornost. It was here that Davian spent his childhood and early adolescence, exploring deep within the mysterious and ancient forests surrounding the mountains or the small pools and fords of the Brandywine river or the perilous ruins of Annuminas, decrepit from nearly a thousand years of desertion but still beautiful in it's splendor. In this relatively wild and untamed land Davian learned much of independence and self-reliance as his community had few opportunities for trade at the source of the Brandywine and so far north of major routes. Hunting became a trade in which he excelled, as well as combat that kept him alive after multiple goblin encounters. In mid adolescence King Arvedui had made the decision to attempt to partially repopulate Annuminas and Davian's father Castellan was left in charge of this feat. It resulted in a colossal failure but a few years later when a goblin excursion had nearly wiped the small regiment that had set up camp in the abandoned city. Davian's efforts in the melee were renowned throughout the kingdom. It was then that Castellan was summoned to Fornost for the purpose of administrative duties; Davian was compelled to join his father. His father grew into a prominent politician and adviser to the King, leaving Davian to make his name on the borders of Arthedain in combat against the numerous foes seeking to assail the city of Fornost.

Hope you got my PM, Cenor. It has been a busy week and I haven't had the chance to come back to this thread yet. Doesn't look like we've gotten much interest.

Regardless, I'll finish my character sheet in the coming days once I figure out a proper history for Davian to fit the storyline that I have planned. Maybe a few others will sign on in the mean time? If not, the three of us could handle this I'm sure. (:

Okay, Davian is hashed out well enough, I think. Even though we still number only three I will probably make the first post in the next couple of days depending on how busy I am. Hopefully that will generate some interest.

Update: I had a quick burst of inspiration and began the first post for DoD. Unfortunately, I'm quite tired this evening and that inspiration fizzed out quickly. But we have a thread started now and perhaps a few others will join our cause!

I will definitely be posting again here soon to continue introducing Davian and setting the scene for the beginning of our RP in the forward camp. Feel free to post at will if you'd like.

May I join? I still have to think of a character...maybe an older elf or young human girl?

That is a brilliant idea! It would link our characters quite well and it does make sense. Davian is an experienced swordsman and hunter who has seen a fair amount of battle in his 28 years of life. Quintin's father could be in league with Davian's father Castellan and perhaps the apprenticeship was arranged by them?

Thank you for having me, Eldarion! I have been working on an introductory post for the past few days. I believe my main character will be a young girl who has been separated from both parents. I have a couple other minor characters planned as well. At some point I may get around to putting up a full profile for the girl, but my first post should give enough background.

I should be good to see this through though I'll likely be slow in the beginning (too much RL, not enough time for fantasy writing). Therefore, I think I'll introduce two characters that are not in Fornost as yet, but out in the field. They will eventually arrive before/when the assault starts, and will be interactive. Would this be a problem for anyone?

That shouldn't for me, Arveleg. I will have one character in Fornost, and I will introduce the plague there in my first post if that works for everyone.

Not an issue for me at all, Arveleg.

Once everyone converges on Fornost in how ever many posts that takes, the great battle can ensue and all shall be lost! I know I mentioned in the first post that we will begin a few months before the actual invasion but, unless anyone has any issues with it, I'm thinking we may begin perhaps a week maybe? We can all see from our unique perspectives the orc invasion brewing or at least the telltale signs of it and then return to Fornost and whatnot. A few months is a bit much.

Post Character Bios - Arveleg
on: October 13, 2014 04:27
With all plagues (take the current ebola outbreak for instance), there are those that die quickly, those that get really sick and wish to die, and may after time, or live somehow, and some who for reasons unknown only get a mild case but fight it off. I'm sure it will work out.

Here are three character profiles I'll write. One will likely be shortlived.

Name: Dauwna
Age: 25
Gender: Female
Race: Edain – Northern Dunedain of Rhuadurian descent
Height/Weight: 6 foot 154 Lb/70 Kg
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Chambermaid of Fornost.
Appearance: Shapely feminine frame that masked her true strength. Hair is long and slightly curly, nearly black with a dark brown tint when in direct sunlight. Eyes are deep grey that sometimes has a silvery gleam to them. Her skin appears pale against her dark hair, but she tans easy in the summer sun.

Skills: Dauwna learned some blacksmithing from her father, and knows some herb-lore learned from her aunt. She has some abilities with a healing hand. As for weapons, she learned some skill with a knife from her father who enjoyed making them for her.

Personality & Bio: Dauwna was the younger child of a blacksmith. Her mother died shortly after her birth, so was raised by an aunt that worked in the royal kitchen. As she got older, she would work with her father and travel with him when he had need to go to Bree. Dauwna was always a quiet and withdrawn child who usually kept to herself. Working with her aunt, she learned to listen, and so would hear much, especially as she grew to adulthood. It was then she became restless, and started to become wayward. Only when she fell in love with a soldier from Arthedain named Macardil did she start to settle down. They were only recently married, not long before he was assigned to the Watch in the Weather Hills. She longs for the day he will return.

===================================================================

Name: Malassuil
Age: 99
Race: Northern Dunedain
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Soldier of Arthedain – 75 year veteran.
Appearance: Long thick dark hair peppered with silver-grey, slightly curled, and roughly hewn about the shoulders. short grey beard blending in with the grey temples. A few small scars could be seen on his bare arms. A large, very prominent scar cut down across the left cheekbone. He is considered tall even by the standards of the northern Dunedain, and quite muscular. His usual attire was his sturdy, yet supple and well-worn dark rust-brown leathers consisting of boots, breeches, and a thick leather sleeveless vest. Over it all he would wear a well-worn dark grey-green hooded cloak that had some few small tatters, unadorned except with a silver rayed brooch on the left shoulder.

Bio: Born and raised in a remote homestead in the rugged North Downs, he didn't remember his mother for she died giving birth to him. His father was away much of the time for he was a soldier. Malassuil was keen to learn, and he would watch and learn from the tradesmen that would come at times. He would listen and absorb from others all he could, especially from his father and the other soldier who would stay at the house at times. He became skilled with knife and bow, and even more so with a sword. He tended to his training and would become in time, as most young men of the Dunedain did, a soldier of the realm. Through the decades, he fought many skirmishes in the wide lands between the North Down, The Weather Hills, and the Ettenmoors. Now ageing, he tends to remain in the forward positions, watching out for the young soldiers. Having seen so many fall over the years, he did not sleep well, and does not cope living within the walls of Fornost.

==================================================================

Name: Marcadil
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Race: Northern Dunedain
Height/Weight: 6’8” 198Lb/90Kg
Marital Status: Married
Occupation: Soldier of Arthedain – 5 year veteran
Appearance: Dark hair, slightly curled, roughly hewn about the shoulders. Slight facial hair, thickening at the chin that is also roughly hewn. He has a large, prominent scar cutting inward and down across the right side of his forehead, cleaving his eyebrow, and reappearing down on his lower eyelid and out across his right cheekbone. His eyes are sea-grey, with a permanent squint from the right one. He walked with an ever-so-slight limp from his right leg. His usual attire was his sturdy, yet supple and well-worn dark rust-brown leathers consisting of boots, breeches, a sleeveless vest and a full-sleeved coat cut and fitted allowing for free arm movement. Over it all he would wear a well-worn dark grey-green hooded cloak that had some few small tatters, unadorned except with a silver rayed brooch on the left shoulder. It was a rough uniform of the 2nd Company of the Eastern Watch.

Bio: Born and raised south of Fornost, he was primarily raised by his mother as his father, being a soldier of Arthedain, was away much of the time in service. Keen to learn, he would listen and absorb from others all he could. As he grew, he became skilled with knife and bow, and was somewhat less so with a sword. He rarely passed a chance to train and would become, as his father was, a soldier of the Kingdom of Arthedain.

As his first assignment he was to watch the road east and south of Bree, and became more learned in the ways of the wild. He and his outfit were later posted to watch the Weather Hills, and he experienced his first combat and had his first kills there. One day when riding in the north steppes, they came across an orc raiding party coming from the Ettenmoors. It was a time when these raids were becoming evermore numerous. His horse threw him and he was set upon by an orc blade to the head. It was only his quick movement that kept him alive. But his wounds were critical and he was brought back to Fornost where he spent months healing. With the help of Dauwna, a fair maiden who saw to his care, he recovered in time, but was left with a scar on his face. They fell in love, and after being declared fit to return to duty, they married. Short was their time together as husband and wife, for after only seven days, he was assigned to the Eastern Watch in the northern reaches of the Weather Hills. He has been there for nearly half a year, and longed to get back to Fornost to see his wife. That opportunity came when orders were given that most of the 2nd Company would be heading to Fornost.

==================================================================

Name: Dukhalas
Age: 29
Gender: Male
Race: Rhuadurian Hillman with a trace of Dunedain blood
Height/Weight: 6’2” 194 Lb/88 Kg
Marital Status: Single
Occupation: Merchant Trader/ Hunter/Spy/Mercenary. Currently being paid to be a Scout for Angmar.
Appearance: Lean and muscular with a close cropped beard Hair is sandy brown that he keeps well cropped.
Eyes are light grey/green and his skin is lightly tanned.

Skills: A skilled hunter and a sly trader. Until recently, he had managed to move freely through Arthedain, working his trade as a traveling merchant of goods.
He has some skill with a knife and short sword, but excels in archery. His ability to move quick and with stealth has had its advantages.

Personality & Bio: Born to a Rhuadurian bar wench in a room at the Forsaken Inn. His mother left and went back to her home in the Ettenmoors shortly after. As he got older, he would work with a tanner who taught him his trade. He would at times travel with him when he went to Bree for the markets. Dukhalas was always watching and learning, and his ability to slip around unnoticed allowed him to learn and know much. He was clever, yet he was always felt a distrust by the people of Bree. He would go there less and less. As he grew to adulthood, he took over the tanning business, and started traveling to Fornost to trade goods. His leathers were considered good quality there at the markets. One could have wondered how it was he was able to move freely without trouble from the soldiers of Angmar. As it turned out, he traded with both sides.

Well, I intend on using the plague as a plot device to force our characters out of Fornost and to our next destination. There may or may not be a few deaths along the way, so rest assured, we will not escape unscathed. Otherwise, just as in the ebola outbreak that Arveleg mentioned, some folks are simply lucky enough to not contract it.

Also, I've been meaning to hash out this character's profile and finally got around to it. I'm borrowing from Cenor a bit here...

Eradan, son of Ereth
Gender: Male
Race: Dunedain.
Height/Body: 5'11 and still growing at the end of his adolescent years. Rippled with musculature honed through a few brief years of training.
Age: 17
Location: A child of Fornost and still dedicated to it's protection.
Family: Eradan's parents still live, his father as a struggling tradesman and his mother who maintains a small shop in the Fornost marketplace.
Weapons: Despite extensive training with various melee weapons, Eradan has yet to develop any true skill outside of his beloved archery. His prized bow of yew has seen much, but has been reliable since he first strung it in his adolescence.
Personality: A boy of little self-confidence and cowardice, now a young adult often unsure of himself but having developed the courage to attempt anyways.
Appearance: Rather homely appearance with greasy brown locks and hazelnut hues. Like many of his peers, Eradan has adhered to a strict diet that has complimented his multiple years of training, leaving him in peak physical condition even for his relatively young age.
History: Both his father and mother grew up in the working class of Arthedain. They struggled for years to uphold the opulence of Dunedain upper classes in their honest trades. His father, for years an honest blacksmith, made the decision to send Eradan into the service of the military at a relatively young age. His mother, who oversaw the business side of their relationship, was staunchly against the idea but gave in after a month of particularly low income. As such, Eradan spent only his early childhood in the care of his parents before being scooped up and raised by the nomadic Rangers who consisted of most of the Arthedain military.

Oops I didn't know that he was your soon to be character. Oh well. Here is Quintin, I forgot to post his profile.

Quintin son of Ranion (Cenor)
Gender: male
Race: Dunedain
Height: 5"10" but still growing
Age: 18
Family: Father: Ranion, Mother: Kelia, Brothers: Gareth, Kaelin, Faolen, Sisters: Lilith, Huriel, Nethur.
Animals: Horse: Striker
Weapons: A bow, two knives, and a sword

Personality: Likable, willing to please. Due to his father's strict training elders outside of the family are to be treated with the upmost respect. Stand straight never let your emotions show in the presence of your superiors.

Appearance: Dark, brown short-cut hair and deep blue eyes. It is rare to see him without some sort of weapon, but if he can, he will often leave his sword behind. He wears simple clothes and leather boots.

History:
Lives with his family in a secluded village. His father works in Fornost. More to come.

Skills: Swift of foot, can easily go unseen when she wishes to.

Personality & Bio: Calm, thoughtful and serious, her sensitive nature can lead to despair over the problems of the world. People have often said she seems like an old soul trapped in a young body. She is observant and quick minded.

Freeda grew up in Fornost with her parents, Richard and Meriam. When the plague broke out in Fornost, she was sent away to stay with an aunt and uncle in a nearby town.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Name: Meriam

Gender: Female
Race: Dúnedain
Height/Weight: 5'6" 130 Lb.

Skills: Healing, with herbs grown by herself.

Personality & Bio: A compassionate soul, Meriam loves to help those in need. Always one to keep her chin up in spite of the hard times she has seen.

Meriam grew up on her parent's farm with two sisters, and met Richard at eighteen. They were married two years later. Freeda was born three years after, and more children were born in the following years that did not survive, except one.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Name: Richard
Age: 38
Gender: Male
Race: Edain - Dúnedain
Height/Weight: 5'11" 170 Lb.
Marital Status: Married
Appearance: Powerfully built. Dark blond hair and short beard, with clear blue eyes.

Skills: Good with sword and bow, though the latter is his preferred weapon.

Personality & Bio: Easy going except in a fight, with a sense of humor. Honorable and trustworthy, he quickly earns the respect and friendship of others. His fast and strategic mind is an asset in making battle plans.

Richard grew up an orphan near Bree. He was taken in by the Rangers at a young age. He remained a Ranger after marrying Meriam, but spent as much time with her and their daughter as possible. Recently, the growing threats from all directions have taken him far from home.

Probably more details to come once I hash these characters out a little more.

Wonderful guys!

Now thanks to Song I have created another character.

Barad (Cenor)
Gender: male
Race: Dunedain
Height: 6" 1"
Age: 30
Location: Difficult to say. He often scouts for the 1st and other companys.
Family: Died of an unexplained disease. A friend of the family took him in.
Animals: A chestnut mare named: Delia
Weapons: A long sword that is nicked in several places and a dagger in his boot.

Personality: Rather lightheared at times but now that he has seen war and bloodshed one can find him gazing solemnly at nothing. He will listen and obey orders but when asked he will give an opinion.

Appearance: Blue eyes with rather fair hair for a Dunedain. He is tall and has a scraggly beard.

History:
He was raised by a friend of the family after they died. He is a scout for the 1st or any other company that needs one.

Love your characters 'Song' & 'Cenor'!! Song, I like how you write! You have a good eye for detail!

'Cenor'! Good to write with you again! I was thinking we needed a scout to bring in some recon, and Barad sounds perfect!

I did an edit to my last post as I had added a bit at the end that in hindsight doesn't really fit. Maybe Meriam and Richard may want a bit of time overnight, as does Dauwna and Marcadil? I'll post the 'Next Morning in Fornost' bit in a new post. Hope that doesn't cause a problem with anyone.

Thank you, Arveleg! I like your style as well. I think we make a good group.

Arveleg, either way works for me on that. I should have specified the time to make my post more clear.

No worries. I think I made it better with the split. I was in a bit of a rush when I posted it, so fixed it up some.

Thank you Arveleg! I hope this RP lasts forever (okay really long time ). I liked how you included the RP's title in your post Song.

Well, we've two stages for the beginning of our thread: Fornost, where the plague will begin and the North Downs where our heroes will soon be overrun by orcs. The two will merge soon enough and I must say I am excited to see this thread progress.

Eldarion, I believe it is the 2nd that left Fornost. & the 1st is already up in the North Downs.

Lady Eruwestiel and I discussed writing some co-posts, so worry not that I made mention of one of her characters in my last post. I had to do an edit to my post as I missed a major point. Hoping it makes more sense now.

This is a link to some information on the geography of the area we are writing about. It gives a good perspective of the area we are writing in
.
The North Downs runs from Fornost at its southeast end, about a hundred miles to the northeast, and are from about 20 miles to 50 miles wide over that stretch.

The Ettenmoors are due east about 100+ miles from the northeast reach of the North Downs, and Carn Dum is around 150+ miles farther northeast from this point.

It would be possible for a large army of orcs (and hillmen of Rhuadur) would assault both the north-facing and possibly the south-facing slopes of the North Downs. In my tactical opinion (and if I was the Witch-King’s commander), I would send some heavy infantry against the North Downs to engage the men there and hold them in place, while sending many more lighter and swifter forces around to the south, and have another force hook around to the west of the North Downs to assault Fornost directly from two sides. Arthedain would have to depend on its mounted soldiers to fight on two fronts, and hope any defender in the North Downs would be able to disengage and retreat toward Fornost. The defence against the southern sweep would be to have a strong enough force in the Weather Hills that could attack the left flank of the invaders and break them up. But the 2nd only left a few behind in the Weather Hills as a token defence.

Anyway… just musing here… carry on, and happy writing!

Hope my tactics are feasible in this last post! I never finished 'The Art of War', but I think I've read enough Sun Tzu to have some understanding of battle. Of course, if anything sounds off I can rework it.

Arveleg, your suggestion of orcs flanking Fornost from two sides whilst attacking the North Downs makes more sense than what I was thinking, so I think that should be the approach they'll take. It seemed sensible to have the 1st make a tactical withdrawal back to Fornost in the mean time. As for the battle when it gets that far, Davian would clearly relinquish tactical command to Malassuil and I'll let you take the reins there.

Hope everyone is enjoying the thread as much as I am. (:

Great post Eldarion! I like it! It has the touch of the "Fog of War" to it, making battle plans on the fly to counter what commander 'thinks' is the situation. And has the makings of the trainees having to hone their skills with some "on the job training" in a real fight!

It fits well with a post Lady Eruwestiel and I are putting together for the 2nd since we both have characters heading into the downs. Have a 'fog of war' surprise brewing with it too that, I believe, will fit well with your post. We;ll be able to work in the meeting with the scouts of the 1st!

I'm going to throw in an NCE character post here to facilitate some of this. Won't hurt to have a baddie's perspective. Here's a brief outline of him...

==============================================================

Name: Ghorg
Race: Tracker Orc
Weapons: Sword, Knife

Bio: A commander in the Witch King's army. leading a unit of smaller, lighter armed, fast-moving orcs. With their uncanny ability of stealth, they are used primarily for raiding and scouting.
