Post Help With Pippin Tattoo
on: October 11, 2014 09:59
Hi I was looking for some help for a tattoo idea, need some help from the experts!

My childhood dog recently passed away, I named him Pippin when I was 10 and in the middle of reading The Two Towers.

I reread all the books this past month and picked out the phrase “Ernil i Pheriannath” meaning Prince of the Halflings, which is what Pippin is called in Minas Tirith.

I think I have the correct translation into Elvish writing, but I’m honestly not sure and I don’t want to mess it up… It is very confusing and I could use some guidance.

Much appreciated.

I believe this phrase is actually in Sindarin, which uses the Tengwar differently than Quenya (the mode you are using). There are two common modes of Sindarin Tengwar: the tehta mode and the Beleriand mode. The tehta mode uses the vowel marks in a similar way to Quenya, except the vowel sound precedes the letter it is marked over. The mode of Beleriand uses tengwar for the vowels instead of tehtar, more like English.

I use the Tengwar Annatar font to type Elvish, and if you download it (here http://www.dafont.com/tengwar-annatar.font) and install it, you can copy the following text into Microsoft Word or any other similar text editor and it will show the correct Tengwar writing.

Tehta Mode:
7F5j% `B e7Fh5{#3D

Mode of Beleriand:
l76`j ` el7`]5]3

Hope this helps!

P.S. you might also want to post this in the Sindarin Forum to make sure the Sindarin Tengwar have been used correctly
