Post Distances in Quenya?
on: June 11, 2015 02:26
I've looked all over the 3 Internets for anything mentioning distances in Quenya. can't find a word for meter, yard, leagues or anything.
I want to know how to say "it's 2km to town" or something like that. Also what about weights?

From the Quenyallo at Ardalambion:
lár (1) noun "league", a linear measure, 5000 rangar. A ranga was approximately 38 inches, so a lár was "5277 yards, two feet and four inches (ca. 4826 m), supposing the equivalence to be exact" - close enough to our league of 5280 yards to justify this translation.

I don't know about weights. But if you want you might use ondo for stone = 6.35 kg.

Thanks for answers. I suspected there wasn't a direct translation for the meter even though I hoped so. I guess 1 lár can be approx 5km which makes one ranga just under a meter, close enough for me. Less so for the ondo. I guess for practical purposes we can just say a quenya version of gram just like other languages do.

In PE 12 (pre LOTR Qenya) talma/talmë is mentioned as a weight (but talma also means 'base' in LOTR Quenya). So it could be used as a gram or kilogram if you want.

There is also rangwe "fathom" attested in the Etymologies.
