You either raise, or lower, the price of the item. They discontinued the penny because the copper used to make it cost more than the coin was worth, and because people hoard pennies in jars so the majority of the minted coins are out of circulation. Frankly, I think it's awesome!

Incidentally, it does not apply to credit card or debit card transactions, only cash transactions.
