Post Tips For Newbies !!

1.) Print out the lessons. Once you have a hard copy, you will be able to look over the lesson whenever you have some spare time, as well as highlight the important points.

2.) You absolutely need a Sindarin dictionary. Either use CoE's here: http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Dictionary&file=index
or download a free copy of Dragonflame from this site: http://www.jrrvf.com/hisweloke/sindar/df20.html

3.) Do not try to memorize all of the Sindarin consonant mutations. I spent many hours developing a Mutation Chart (based on Gildor-Inglorian's lessons) so that you could print everything out on one page, and have it by your computer for quick easy reference at all times. The chart includes the mutations, what causes them, and the definitions of the words and prepositions that cause them also. You will find it here: http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Content&file=index&action=ViewContent&cid=3

4.) To help with Sindarin Verbs, there are charts of most of the Sindarin verbs already completely conjugated for you on the same downloads page as the Mutation Chart. They print out on about 8 pages. Be sure to have your printer set to "Landscape" for these charts !! Change your printer setting to "Landscape" by clicking "File", then "Page Setup", then click "Landscape" under Orientation. Once you do that, click "OK" and the box will disappear. Proceed to print as you normally would then. To change it back to "Portrait", retrace the above steps and click "Portrait" instead of "Landscape".
http://www.councilofelrond.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Content&file=index&action=ViewContent&cid=6

5.) To help you understand the concepts behind the conjugations, there are charts for "How to Conjugate Sindarin Verbs". These charts will take you through the i-umlauts, intervocalic changes, etc. which result in the different verb forms. They also print out on about 8 pages ... set printer to "Portrait" for these charts. They are also on the same downloads page.

6.) To use the different Sindarin accents on words, go here: http://www.councilofelrond.com/languages/SACHART.htm

7.) Get a study buddy !!

Another good idea is to translate as many things as you can, from LotR or anything else. It really helped me!

It also helps to get a 3-ring binder to hold everything!

(Mine's a 3-incher! LOL!)

I'd love to start learning Elvish.
I just get overwhelmed easily.
I tend to pick up languages
better when I hear it spoken.
Not so much on the visual side
sometimes.

Have you got any links for quick-reference Quenya charts etc?

I have a binder as well, with the subject separator things--I need another one for my other lotr stuff.

Your about as obsessed as me, NutMeg!

Another good thing is to find someone to talk to in the language, over the phone or in person. I don't have anyone, though ! But I know a few people who say it really helps with pronunciation!

What I find really helps is to print off translations that other people on this site have made, and read through them, picking up new vocab, and working out how they have conjugated verbs and lenited words.

allo. I've something to say!

Make flashcards.

I did this for my vowels that change when you go from singular to plural, and it's helping quite a bit...there are so many....

anyways, good luck.

I've found it also helps to use lenitiion on english words to get used to the idea of it!
My friends fear for my mental sanity, I don't acknowledge it but don't contest it either.............................................

I'm obviously new and I find it all very interesting. I know elvish is not a real language, but it's fun to do and the people of this site are doing a marvellous job to try and teach people. English is not my native language, so I do have hard time to understand what pronouns, etc, are, but I guess I'll learn if I look it up.

Not that I will ever use this elvish 'language' anywhere else than on message boards and sorts, but it's fun to know you can say something and almost no one will understand

That, my friend, is something you will have to decide! The languages, while related, are quite different. Choose whichever seems most appealing to you. You can always learn the other later.

I guess I'm a bit confused about what you are asking here. :dizzy: If you could tell us what it is you want explained to you, we'd be happy to try to help.

Hey!

As you can obviously tell, im a newbie to the site. My sister (who's already a member here) got me started on the whole lotr scene. Im now looking at learning Sindarin to as far as it has been discovered so far, and hopefully with the way things are adapted an acceptible system will be developed so that it can indeed become an everyday spoken language.

I know that i'll be learning everything i can until that day.

Thatnks for the resources that you've put up! it'll help alot!
