New ZealandThis page will be about New Zealand and the LotR locations, and I hope you'll enjoy it when it's finished. I went to New Zealand this Christmas, and I loved it! Be patient, it's going to take a while! New Zealand consists of two large islands, the North Island and the South Island, and many small islands, like Stewart Island and the Chatham Islands. The capital is Wellington, but Auckland is the largest city. The first humans came to New Zealand sometime between 1000-1300. They called it Aotearoa, which means 'Land of the Long White Cloud'. These people were Maoris. The Maoris didn't know metal, but made tools of wood, stone and bone. They introduced the sweet potato (kumara), which grew really well in the northern part of New Zealand. Further south the people hunted the moa, which became extinct. Fish was also important. The Dutch explorer Abel Tasman reached New Zealand in 1642, as the first European. In 1769 the British explorer James Cook came, and he claimed parts of the country for the British king George III. European settlers started arriving, and on 6. February 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. This Treaty made New Zealand a British colony, and all sale of land would be done via the government. When the Maori realised they could no longer sell their land as they wished, wars broke out, like in Waikato, Taranaki and the north. My Favourite Paces I'll write about some of my favourite places in New Zealand here, including why I like them, and maybe some pictures! North Island: The Bay of Islands This is quite far north. As the name says, there are a lot of islands. I went dolphin-watching there There are also Kauri-trees in the area Rotorua Hot springs, bubbling mud pools, and the not so lovely smell of rotten eggs (don't worry, you'll get used to it!) Matamata One word: Hobbiton! I went to Bag End Tongariro National Park Mordor and the Emyn Muil. Very pretty volcanoes! If you like walking, I recommend the Tongariro crossing! (I did it) South Island: Abel Tasman National Park One of my favourite places in the world *sigh* I wish I could go back there. There's a path around the entire park, you can get picked up/dropped off by a water taxi, go kayaking, swimming etc. There are beautiful sand beaches Kaikoura Wales! I saw 7 or 8! The average is 1 or 2 and something which was supposed to be quite unusual; two wales at the same time! Christchurch I only was there for a couple of hours, but it looked like a very nice city!
