A History of Hobbits:

There were three types of Hobbits: Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallowhides. The Harfoots were darker in complexion, and were the smallest and shortest of the three types. They were sure-footed and nimble, and they preferred living in highlands and hillsides. They tended to settle into one place, and kept their ancestral habit of living in tunnels and holes. In ancient times they interacted with Dwarves. They were considered the most representative of the three types, and the most numerous.

The Stoors were of comparably broader and heavier build, and had larger feet and hands. They preferred to live in the flat lands and along riversides. Of the three types they were the least shy of Men. In fact, the word Hobbit was originally given to the Harfoots by the Stoors and Fallowhides, and is a derivative of the Rohan term Holbytla or “hole-builder”. The Hobbit language is similar in many ways to that of Men, and the language of the Second Born (Men) is similar in many ways to that of the First Born (Elves). Soon all Hobbits would speak what became known as the Common Speech, after migrating into Eriador.

The Fallowhides had pale complexions and light-colored hair, and were the tallest and slimmest of the three types. They preferred to live in woodland areas. They interacted with the Elves, who referred to them as Perian (plural is Periannath) “Halfling”. While they were the least numerous, they were also considered the boldest and most adventurous of the three types. The Fallowhides were often leaders of clans of Harfoots and Stoors. Fallowhide characteristics are seen later in greater families, such as the Tooks and Masters of Buckland.

What follows is a timeline of some of the highlights in Hobbit History. In this table, the C beside the year means Common Era, starting from the death of Isildur.

c. 1000  The first accounts of the periannath mentioned in ancient tales.  They were thought to have dwelt in the vale  of the upper Anduin near Greenwood the Great. It is also around this time that they begin to migrate westward,  which was likely caused by the unrest felt from the reawakened spirit  of Sauron entering Greenwood (which was later changed to Mirkwood).  The early periannath migrate over the Misty Mountains.  It is believed that the first of these peoples to enter Eriador were later known as Harfoots.

1150  The  Fallowhides migrate into Eriador, traveling north along the River Hoarwell. Around this same time, the Stoors migrate over the Redhorn Pass,  moving south towards Dunland.

1300  The  western Hobbits begin to move further west, from Weathertop, and settle among the Men of the Old North Kingdom. The chief Hobbit settlement was on and around the Hill of Bree.

1400  Evil  is on the increase, with attacks on Dwarves and Men. Part of the Stoors clan return to Wilderland  and reside near the River Gladden that flows into the Anduin. They adjust to their new home by becoming  skilled in fishing and boating.  Some Stoors leave, traveling north, then west, and join the Harfoots and  Fallowhides.

1601  Men  and Hobbits of Bree live together and maintain their independence. A large group of Bree dwelling Hobbits migrate west and cross the River Baranduin (Brandywine). The land before them, between the Brandywine and Emyn Beraid was under the rule of King Argeleb II, the Tenth King to the Arthdain.  Argeleb II gives this land to the Hobbit via representatives Marco and Blanco, who name this expanse the “Shire”.
The Hobbits become subjects of the King in name, but still retain their independence, and were ruled by their own chieftains. The Stoors soon join them from southern Eriador, to dwell near the Brandywine.

1976   From years of battles, internal strife, and plague the line of King Argeleb II degenerated, and the Hobbits are able to claim the Shire as their own.A Thain is elected to take the place of the King.  Bucca (SR 1379) was the first Thain—from whom the Old Bucks would later claim descent.

2000  Deagol of the Stoors finds the One Ring in the River Anduin near the Gladden Fields were Isildur was slain.  Overcome with desire for the One Ring, Deagol is soon murdered by his cousin Smeagol. The Ring soon twists Smeagol, and his fearful  clan casts him out.

2010  Smeagol, now called Gollum, takes up residence in the Misty Mountains.

2790 The birth of Gerontius Took, who later becomes the 14th Thain. He lives 130 years, and is ultimately known  as the Old Took.

2891  Bilbo  Baggins is born to Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took, daughter of the Old Took.

2911  The Fell Winter.  White wolves invade the Shire.

2920  The death of Gerontius Took.

2940  Bilbo is visited by the wizard Gandalf, who volunteers him for burgling Thorin Oakenshield’s gold from the lair of the dragon Smaug, in the Misty Mountains.Near Smaug’s lair, Bilbo finds the One Ring, which has left Gollum.Gollum attempts to trick Bilbo out of the Ring with a riddle contest, but Bilbo uses the Ring to become invisible and escapes.

2941 Bilbo returns to the Shire with a portion of Smaug’s treasure, and the One Ring.
