Caranthir

Related Terms: Fëanor, Thargelion, Dol-Caranthir

Caranthir was the fourth of the Sons of Fëanor, and the most quick-tempered, touchy and eventually evil. After returning to Middle-earth and fighting in the Battle-under-Stars, he took Thargelion as his realm. To guard against attack from the North, he fortified the mountains around Lake Helevorn.

He was the first of the Elven Lords to encounter the Dwarves, and all the subsequent trade between the two races passed through Caranthir.

Dol-Caranthir was lost in the Dagor Bragollach, and he fled south with his people to the land of Amrod and Amras. He dwelt there until the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, in which he played a valiant part. However, he also brought the Men of the Eastern race to the fight - who turned out to be Morgoth's agents.

After the Battle, Caranthir lived with his brothers Curufin and Celegorm in Beleriand, seeking some way to fulfil their Oath. They went to assail Menegroth, to seize the Silmaril held there, and all the three of the brothers were slain in the battle with Dior Eluchíl.

In the notes for a planned “excursus” on the names of the Sons of Fëanor (c.1968) Tolkien gave his Quenya name as Morifinwë 'dark' named for his grandfather from whom he inherited his very dark hair. In these same notes his mother-name is given as Carnistir , 'red face'. (Source: HoME Vol.XII, The Shibboleth of Fëanor)
