He was the twenty-fifth of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor. He was farsighted, so he began to put forth all efforts into the strengthening on his realm against the threat of Sauron, who had only recently returned and revealed himself. Ecthelion II was aided in his endeavors by Gandalf and a stranger who in Gondor was named Thorongil. This stranger was revealed in later years to be Aragorn son of Arathorn II.
