Battle of Dagorlad

Related Terms: Last Alliance of Elves and Men

The Battle of Dagorlad was fought in the 3434 Second Age between the armies of Sauron and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. After months of fighting, and grievous losses to both sides, the Last Alliance was victorious, due to the bravery of Gil-galad and Elendil. The siege went on for seven years afterwards, but this was the key battle.

It was fought on the dry and dusty plain before the gates of Mordor. Many of the dead were engulfed by the nearby marshes which were later named the Dead Marshes for that reason.

The original name of the plain is unknown, but the battle was such a momentous one that the plain it was fought on is now referred to only as 'Dagorlad', meaning 'the Battle Plain'.
