Battle of Fornost

Related Terms: Fornost, Eärnur, Witch King, Arthedain, Angmar

TA 1974. The Battle of Fornost was the final battle of the Dúnedain and their allies against Angmar.

The Elves of Lindon, and the host of Eärnur of Gondor, defeated the Witch-king, destroying his army and his power base of Angmar, and taking revenge for his ruinous attack of the previous year on the kingdom of Arthedain.

The forces of Men and Elves met the Witch-king's armies on the plains towards Lake Evendim, near Fornost, the chief city of Arthedain. Aided by Eärnur's military skill, and a force sent out of Rivendell led by Glorfindel of Rivendell, the armies of the Dúnedain and Elves were victorious, and Angmar's armies were swept away.

The Battle of Fornost left Gondor without its Kings. When the Witch-king fled, he did not forget his defeat at the hands of Eärnur. Many years later, Eärnur became the King of Gondor, and the Witch-king challenged him to single combat. He refused, but seven years later the challenge was made again, and this time Eärnur accepted.

Riding to Minas Morgul, he was taken by the Nazgûl and never heard from again. He was the last King to rule Gondor until after the War of the Ring nearly a thousand years later.
