Author and map-maker Karen Wynn Fonstad died on the 11th March 2005.
While best known to us as the author and map-maker for "The Atlas of Middle-earth", Karen was also a freelance map-maker and a part-time lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. You can see many of her maps in our Gallery's Map section.
As well as creating "The Atlas of Middle-earth", Karen also wrote and illustrated "The Atlas of Pern", "The Atlas of the Dragonlance World" and "The Forgotten Realms Atlas".
She was also associated with the Éowyn Challenge a project taken up by many of the realms on this site.

How very sad! She was talented and gave those of us map-challenged readers invaluable resources... She will be missed.

She was such a talented lady. I'm lucky enough to have one of her books and it is one of my favorite Lord of the Rings reference books. I know that all of us "Ringers" will miss her dearly!
