The Vanyar and Noldor in Aman

– Oromë led the Vanyar and the Noldor into Beleriand, and when they reached the Sea at the Bay of Balar, Ulmo came and talked to the elves, reassuring them and calming their fears about the wide expanse of ocean.
– Ulmo then uprooted an island from the middle of the sea and towed it into the Bay of Balar. The Vanyar and Noldor got onto the island, and Ulmo towed them across the Sea to Valinor.

– In Aman, the Valar built a city for the Vanyar and the Noldor on a hill called Túna. The city was called Tirion. Tirion was separated from Valinor by a pass in the Pelori mountains called the Calacirya, through which the light of the Trees illuminated the city.
– Tirion had white walls, terraces and towers, and the highest of the towers was the Tower of Ingwë. In the courts of Ingwë’s Tower, Yavanna planted a lesser image of Telperion. This tree – the White Tree of Tirion – was called Galathilion.

The Vanyar

The Vanyar were beloved of Manwë and Varda. As the ages passed, the Vanyar left Tirion and went to live in Valinor or on Taniquetil, as they had grown to love the land of the Valar, and the full light of the Two Trees. Ingwë, known as the High King of all the Elves, lived at the feet of Manwë upon Taniquetil.

The Noldor

The Noldor were beloved of Aulë, and they quickly became knowledgeable and skilful, and were eager to learn. They delighted in the building of high towers, and their masons quarried the surrounding hills for stone, in the process discovering earth-gems. They devised tools for the cutting and shaping of the gems, and gave the results of their labour freely throughout Valinor.

The Lords of the Noldor

The King of the Noldor was Finwë, and he lived in Tirion.
Finwë was married first to Míriel, and they had one son – Fëanor.
Finwë was married second to Indis of the Vanyar, and they had two sons – Fingolfin and Finarfin.

Fëanor was the mightiest in learning and skill, and his spirit burned as a flame. He had seven sons: Maedhros, Maglor, Celegorm, Caranthir, Curufin, Amrod and Amras. They seldom stayed in one place for long, travelling all over Valinor, seeking the unknown.

Fingolfin was the strongest, most steadfast and most valiant. He had two sons and one daughter – Fingon, Turgon and Aredhel the White

Finarfin was the fairest and the wisest in heart. He married Eärwen, daughter of Olwë, and they had four sons and one daughter – Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel.

The Teleri in Middle-earth and Tol Eressëa

– The Teleri remained in Middle-earth, not hearing Ulmo’s summons as they lived far from the sea, and many were occupied in searching for Elwë. However, when they learnt that the Vanyar and Noldor had departed, then many of the Teleri came eventually to live on the shores of Beleriand, around the Mouths of Sirion. In the absence of Elwë, they took his brother Olwë as their sole king. While they were there, Ossë befriended them and taught them sea-lore and sea-music.
– After many years, Ulmo came back to the Teleri on the prayer of the Noldor, and then most of them set off on the journey to Valinor. But two groups of the Teleri stayed behind:

– Ossë persuaded some of them to stay, and they became the Falathrim. Their lord was Círdan the Shipwright.
– The kinsfolk and friends of Elwë also stayed, searching for him, even though they did wish to travel to Valinor. They called themselves the Eglath, the Forsaken People.

– Elwë eventually awoke from his trance, and he and Melian went to live in the middle of Beleriand. His people found him, though he then appeared as one of the lords of the Maiar, his hair grey silver, and he was the tallest of the Children of Ilúvatar.

– Ossë followed Ulmo and the Teleri host on the journey to Aman, and when they got to the Bay of Eldamar, he called out to the elves, who then asked Ulmo to stop their journey. With Ulmo’s permission, Ossë then anchored the island in the Bay, and it became known as Tol Eressëa.

– After a long age in Tol Eressëa, the Teleri decided they wished to live in Aman, and Ossë was sent to them to teach them how to build ships. When the ships were finished, Ossë sent swans to them, to draw their ships over the bay to Aman.

– Most of the Teleri decided to live by the sea in the Bay of Eldamar, and they built their city there, which was called Alqualondë, the Haven of the Swans. The King of Alqualondë was Olwë.
