Text in bold are lines from the trailer; text in italics is just me babbling, or lines from the book. You can view all of the screencaps in the gallery.

This should be pretty obvious, but this article contains spoilers.

A nice atmospheric shot of the mountains.

Book: “Riders!” cried Aragorn, springing to his feet. “Many riders on swift steeds are coming towards us!” “Yes,” said Legolas, “there are one hundred and five. Yellow is their hair, and bright are their spears. Their leader is very tall.”

Book: Their horses were of great stature, strong and clean-limbed; their grey coats glistened, their long tails flowed in the wind, their manes were braided on their proud necks. The Men that rode them matched them well: tall and long-limbed; their hair, flaxen-pale, flowed under their light helms, and streamed in long braids behind them; their faces were stern and keen. In their hands were tall spears of ash, painted shields were slung at their backs, long swords were at their belts, their burnished skirts of mail hung down upon their knees.

Rightly looking a bit nervous at being surrounded.

Eomer: “What business does an Elf, a Man and a Dwarf have in the Riddermark?”

Book: Without a word or cry, suddenly, the Riders halted. A thicket of spears were pointed towards the strangers; and some of the horsemen had bows in hand, and their arrows were already fitted to the string.

Eomer: “Speak quickly!”
Book: Then one rode forward, a tall man, taller than all the rest; from his helm as a crest a white horsetail flowed. He advanced until the point of his spear was within a foot of Aragorn’s breast.

Aragorn: “We tracked a band of Urak-hai, westward across the plain.”

Orcs, partying down.

Not exactly sure who this is. I still say its Lurtz’s brother…

Aragorn: “They have taken two of our friends captive.

Eomer: “Look for your friends, but do not trust to hope. It has forsaken these lands.”
Book: “Hope does not remain,” said ĂŠomer. “You will not find your friends on the North-borders.”

Sam and Frodo in Emyn Muil.

Sam: “We’re lost. I don’t think Gandalf meant for us to come this way.”

Frodo: “He didn’t mean for a lot of things to happen, Sam.”

Gandalf battles the Balrog…

Book: ‘Long time I fell,’ he said at last, slowly, as if thinking back with difficulty. ‘Long I fell, and he fell with me. His fire was about me. I was burned. Then we plunged into the deep water and all was dark. Cold it was as the tide of death: almost it froze my heart…We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. ‘

…and then meets up with the remains of the Fellowship

Aragorn: “It cannot be!”

Gandalf: “I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide.”

Notice how Legolas is kneeling before him.

Back with the Orcs…
Gandalf: “Sauron’s forces have begun their attack…”

A great lidless eye…

Not sure if these are Merry & Pippin’s Orcs, or something else altogether.

Gandalf: “…he is using Saruman to destroy your people.”

In Edoras, with Theoden. Is it just me, or does he look pretty healthy? Maybe this is some later part in the movie…

Eowyn on the roof…

The people of Rohan being attacked by Saruman’s forces.

Eowyn: “They were unarmed. They had no warning.”

Gandalf: “This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash.”

Gandalf: “You must fight!”

Theoden: “I will not risk open war.”

Aragorn: “Open war is upon you, whether you would risk it or not.”

Aragorn sees Saruman’s approaching forces.

!!pagebreak!!

Saruman: “A new power is arising. Its victory is at hand.”

Aragorn: “It is an army bred for a single purpose; to destroy the world of men.”

Theoden: “You must lead the people to Helm’s Deep.”
Am confused. Theoden is saying this to Eowyn. She didn’t lead the people to Helm’s Deep, did she? I thought she took them to some other place…

“By order of the King, the city must empty!”

Eowyn: “Where is she, the woman who gave you that jewel?”

Elrond: “The alliance between men and elves is over…”

Erond: “…our time here is ending.”

Elves leaving Rivendell. Are they going to Helm’s Deep?

Erond: “Arwen’s time is ending. Let her go.”

I think this is probably a flashback–it’s doubtful that Elrond suddenly shows up in Rohan.

Gollum: “Where is it?”

Wrestling with Gollum…

Sam: “Let’s just tie him up and leave him!”

Gollum: “No!”

Frodo: “You know the way to Mordor.”

I’m not positive, but I’m guessing this is the gates to Mordor.

I think this must be the shield surfing scene.

Saruman: “There will be no dawn…for men.”

Looks like wargs. Or some damn-ugly horses…

!!pagebreak!!

Sam: “It’s the Ring. [Frodo!] It’s taken hold of you!”

Arwen: “You have the gift of foresight. Tell me what you have seen.”

Erond: “He is not coming back.”

Hard to tell here, but it’s Treebeard, picking up Merry.

Gandalf: “The defenses have to hold.”

Oliphaunt!

Aragorn: “They will hold.”

Frodo is in pain, and Sam is holding his hand. I wonder what this scene is about?

Elrond: “There is nothing for you here. Only death.”

Gandalf the White, kicking some butt.

Arwen: “There is still hope.”

Don’t know about you, but I’m even more impatient than I was before! Only 2 and a half months to go…
