Leeds is known as a manufacturing and industrial hub and as the financial and commercial capital of Yorkshire County.

The University of Leeds came into being in 1904 but its origins go back to the nineteenth century. Within three or four years of receiving its charter, the number of students started to increase rapidly, and the years in which Tolkien was teaching in the department of English were ones of university-wide growth and consolidation.
