Today is Tolkien Reading Day

Today, 25th March, is Tolkien Reading Day and The Tolkien Society is encouraging us to; “Enjoy a hot toasted bun, a warm drink and a Good Book in hobbitish comfort.”

Casting The Rings

The official website for the Lord of the Rings musical has details about forthcoming open auditions for the show. In addition to looking for singers they are also seeking performers with circus skills. There are further details about the auditions at the official website here.

Fellowship! The musical parody

Featuring tap dancing hobbits, a Balrog performing a sequined studded cabaret number and much more, Fellowship! The Musical Parody of The Fellowship of the Ring, has extended its current run to April 9th.

The show is being performed at the Met Theatre, Hollywood, CA and there are further details at Plays411.com.

Saruman is still upset

New Theme Up – Rohan

CoE would like to present a new user theme – Rohan! The theme features the reds and golds associated with the Rohirrim, as well as images of Meduseld and Rohan’s flag. The theme is titled “Rohan” and can be previewed in the theme gallery here as well as under “My Account”.

Happy Birthday Lawrence Makoare

Lawrence Makoare, was born in Bastion Point, New Zealand on March 20th 1968, is 37 years old today. Lawrence played the Uruk-hai leader Lurtz in FotR and in RotK he played the Witch-king of Angmar and Gothmog. You can read his cast bio here.

Sean Astin on literacy and LotR

At the 14th annual Love of Literacy Luncheon, Sean Astin talked about the importance of literacy, his favorite scene from the LotR movies, and how literacy is, “…a profound gift in the world of imagination. If I’ve learned anything from being involved in The Lord of the Rings, I’ve rediscovered my own personal sense of imagination.” You can read the full story here.

Lord of the Rings 3-D?

Reuters report that Peter Jackson joined other famous filmmakers in encouraging theaters to install 3D movie technology. At the event, remastered clips from Lord of the Rings were shown in 3-D.

Peter Jackson has announced no specific plans for using the 3-D technology, but he is reported to have installed the mastering equipment in his production offices.

Karen Wynn Fonstad dies at 59

Author and map-maker Karen Wynn Fonstad died on the 11th March 2005.

While best known to us as the author and map-maker for “The Atlas of Middle-earth”, Karen was also a freelance map-maker and a part-time lecturer at the University of Wisconsin. You can see many of her maps in our Gallery’s Map section.
