Stage show’s big budget a help or a hindrance?
Calendar Live has a review of the LotR stage show in Toronto, considering the effect of the show’s budget, the quality of the adaptation and the storytelling, and a comparison with Peter Jackson’s films, as well as the music of the three-and-a-half hour stage show.

Oh, my. Mayhap someone dropped fissshesss into the reviewer’s pint of ale. I think he was more enamoured of his own clever turn of phrase than he was in talking about the production.
yeah, I loved how he called Elvish “elaborate gibberish”. it really makes me respect the guy’s opinion, you know?
Why would they get someone who seems to REALLY dislike any adaption of the books to review the musical? You don’t send a meat-eater to give a keynote speech at a vegan conference.

Even so, you’ll need to bone up on the books just to follow what’s going on, let alone enjoy the ride.

Why does he make it seem like it’s the musical’s fault that it’s “forcing” people to read? Is it so bad to “bone up on the book”? In the reviews I’ve read, following the plot doesn’t seem to be a problem. Maybe it’s just Charles “Cliff Notes” McNulty who has an issue with it.
I also would have prefered it if he didn’t use comparisons to the film as a method of critique. Theatre and films are different mediums and I don’t believe it’s fair to compare them in the way that he has.
