New Line fined in “Lord of the Rings” lawsuit

The Los Angeles Times report that a federal magistrate has fined New Line Pictures $125,000 for failing to produce potential evidence in Peter Jackson’s lawsuit over the accounting of the first “Lord of the Rings” movie’s income. Judge Stephen J. Hillman fined New Line on Sept. 18, and instructed the studio to retain and pay for an outside electronic document retrieval service.

Happy Hobbit Day

Happy birthday to two of our favorite hobbits, Bilbo and Frodo. At the start of Lord of the Rings Bilbo celebrated his 111th birthday while Frodo celebrated his 33th birthday and came of age.

Exploring Tolkien: There and Back Again

An on-line course, hosted by the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Cardiff University, taught in 10 weekly units, starts on 1st October. The course tutor is Dr. Dimitra Fimi.

Explore Tolkien’s Middle-earth from your home, in your own time. Find out about the vast mythology behind The Lord of the Rings, gain a thorough knowledge of Tolkien’s fiction and its creation, explore the northern European mythologies that inspired Tolkien’s Middle-earth, learn about Tolkien’s invented languages, their origins and sources, find out about the ‘races’ and the cultures of Middle-earth.The course has been updated and enlarged to include a discussion of The Children of Húrin.

Tolkien lectures in Toronto

The White Tree Fund is hosting two great Tolkien lectures in Toronto on September 27th and October 25th. Both will be held at Hart House, University of Toronto.

On September 27, Dr. John Browne is speaking on “Tolkien as Wordsmith: One Reader’s Journey Through the Lord of the Rings.”

On October 5th, there will be a panel discussion of The Children of Hurin.

The History of the Hobbit

A new book set “The History of The Hobbit” will be available from Houghton Mifflin this Friday, September 21st.

Turin in Doriath- the CoE book club

On September 17th, the CoE book club will move on to Chapter V of ‘The Children of Hurin’. Questions, quotes , and links to illustrations, will be posted for members comments and discussion. Feel free, at any time, to pick up a copy of the book and join in with your own comments and questions.

Return of the King: complete recordings release date

According to marketwire.com the complete soundtrack to Return of the King is to be released on November 6, 2007. It will include 5 discs- 4 CDs and one DVD- Audio – a total of 3 hours and 50 minutes of music.
