Trilogy all-nighter at the IMAX Cinema, London

On Saturday 6th December 2008 the complete LotR Trilogy will be shown at the BFI IMAX cinema in Waterloo, London, for only one night, beginning at 11:30pm. There are further details here.

Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits

In this article at WalesOnline Dr Dimitra Fimi of Cardiff University, talks about her forthcoming book, Tolkien, Race and Cultural History: From Fairies to Hobbits. The book is based on her studies and one of the areas she discusses is Tolkien’s love of the Welsh language.

Did Return of the King deserve to be 2003’s best picture? is having its readers vote as to which movie should have won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2003. The nominees were Return of the King, Lost in Translation, Mystic River, Master and Commander, and Seabiscuit. Let’s not let anyone take away ROTK’s, rightfully earned, glory.

Gollum Returns?

Andy Serkis is eager for a Hobbit movie comeback with his character, Gollum. Serkis says,
“In 2010, if all goes according to plan, I think they’re gonna start thinking about The Hobbit. It will be nice to drag Gollum kicking and screaming back out again. It will be great.”

Del Toro and the Dragon has been talking to the future Hobbit director, Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro talks a little bit more about Smaug, saying:
“Smaug is the creature in ‘The Hobbit.’ The way Tolkien wrote it, already, is magnificent. It’s already a fantastic character. So, obviously, you ask every person what their best favorite dragon is, they will give you a different answer. In my mind, what we’re going to attempt on the design of this creature and the creation of this creature needs to push the envelope beyond anything you’ve ever seen on that kind of creature.”

Del Toro adds, “…Smaug has certain characteristics that make him unique already. I am bursting at the seams about spilling the beans, but I won’t because I would be shot.”
