Today, with a sneak peek of Thorin Oakenshield wielding Orcrist, studio pics of all thirteen of Bilbo’s Dwarf companions have been released. To see the picture, and a brief bio, click here.
*thuds head against desk* Let’s see…no gold chain, no sky blue hood, no long beard, no harp. Come on, at least one of the four would have been nice. This looks nothing like a Tolkien dwarf, but more like some warrior from some stock fantasy game. Also, while Thorin wouldn’t look feeble, it would have been nice to see him look somewhat more like the respectable 195 years old he was. Especially since he was the oldest of all the dwarves on the quest…

He looks okay. ๐ Love the sword, and Thorin’s expression looks fiery.
But please PJ, are the future fangirls really worth deviating from canon so radically in two of the key Dwarf distinguishing features – stockiness and rich, long beards?
I really miss the Tolkien-ness with slim, short-bearded (or even moustached) Dwarves. ๐

This doesn’t look like Thorin at all… and some of the other Dwarves seem too Mannish – Kili could be a Man. Maybe I’m too stuck with the idea that all of Tolkien’s Dwarves have long beards and thick bodies just like Gimli.
I really like their clothes and armours though. I bursted out laughing when I saw Bombur!

Man, there is just no pleasing some of you people, is there? Personally, I could practically smell the badassery wafting from the picture. And really, what is Thorin Oakenshield if not badass, harp or no harp?

I’m rapidly losing faith in PJ. He looks like a Klingon….

I’m a bit disheartened by this, as well as by many of the dwarf photos. As a whole they seem a little too much like they were pulled from the depths of a World of Warcraft style MMORPG with some of their ridiculous hairstyles and weaponry. I also feel than many are lacking the feel of Tolkien’s dwarves and their firm, stocky build. A couple of these guys have looked like dwarf/elf mixes. As for Thorin specifically, I do think that he looks too young, and I wish he (and the other dwarves, frankly) was pictured in his sky blue hood. I think one of the great strengths of the design (costumes, weaponry, sets, etc) of LOTR was the weight and reality it had, as though it could have been history, not fantasy. While I know our own medieval predecessors had some rather crazy weapons and outfits, I’m not sure I buy into all of these. I’ll certainly look forward to seeing them in action, hopefully with a different effect.

I was so afraid to click on the picture due to the disappointment from the other dwarf pictures.
However, this one isn’t THAT bad. He is definitely missing things such as his blue hood and such, but he is also missing grey hair!! He’s too young!
Thorin was the oldest in the group, right?
I think PJ could have learned a few things from the comic book pictures by David T. Wenzel and/or the video game for the Game Cube. They did the dwarves and everyone else exactly as I had imagined and spot on.
This is just ridiculous. C’mon, PJ! You created Gimli perfectly! What happened?
*Goes off to cry miserably*
P.S. If you’re wondering why I’m so upset, it is because The Hobbit is my favorite Tolkien book. I didn’t want them to make it into a movie in the first place. =(

lol Thorin looks a bit like Feanor, I think… ๐
He doesn’t really look like a dwarf. Of course quite a few of the others don’t either.
Oh well… if the movie doesn’t turn out well, the book will still be the same.

I thought earlier that I thought the lighting was bad in this picture. So I used my Photoshop skills to fix only the lighting.
Bhdskjaj *gets water in nose* That’s the OLD Thorin? You know what, I think he looks a bit like one of his nephews… When I saw this picture I was just “Ah, isn’t that Fili-or-was-it-Kili?”. But it’s the old Thorin.
PJ, you aren’t trying to do this just because of the fangirls, are you?

The story of Thorin’s family exit into exile is a sad one. No one came to their aid. In a sense became these survivors became homeless refugees begging for food and work. The influence of the different races(men, elves, hobbits) would have had an effect on the dwarfs(probably why some images look more dwarfish than others.
